First performance was tonight. So much to learn about the rhythm of the piece. So interesting to hear the audience laugh, hold its breath. The laughter in particular creates new markers, new 'ends of a phrase,' since the piece is so spare, sonically. We needed this first performance in order to begin to calibrate the rhythm.
More on this tomorrow.

It is indeed "...interesting to hear the audience laugh, hold its breath." Even more interesting is to wonder why the audience is laughing. John Wright's question in his practical exloration of Physical Comedy is apt - "Why is that so funny?"
Having now seen ISABELLA twice (once in rehearsal, then on opening night) I wonder myself how one is "to calibrate the rhythm" of performance given the unknown tendencies of any given audience. I laughed many times throughout the performance but for many different reasons. I will return again next week to discover how the calibrating going on behind the scenes will effect the collaborating taking place on stage.
