Throw in a couple eggs, some flour, sugar, a little yeast, and maybe some cinnamon and a few raisins for dramatic effect, stick it in the oven for a while, and you get something resembling my thoughts on the data:
-- Over the last three weeks, St. Joe's' RPI has gone from 84 to 94 and back to 84 again. Might have something to do with the fact that last night marked the Hawks' first two-game winning streak since Jan. 10.
-- Villanova also went 2-0 in the last week, but didn't move much because they can't go too much higher until they start running into the really big teams. It's worth noting that the Wildcats have the third-highest Pomeroy rating in the Big East, but are in seventh place in the conference standings.
-- With Temple, I think the lack of movement relative to last Thursday results only from the fact that I haven't checked the numbers for a week. I would think that yesterday morning they were much higher on Monday, after the UMass win, than they were this morning after the loss at La Salle. And no, I am not going to start doing this twice a week.
-- Drexel and La Salle also went 1-1 since last week's Crunchy Numbers. The fact that Drexel didn't move in the RPI between last Thursday and today is a testament to how strong the CAA is this season. For as good as the win at Hofstra was, last night's loss at William and Mary really stunk (the Tribe are 166th in Pomeroy and 171st in RPI), and I expected the Dragons to be knocked down for it. The fact that La Salle didn't move much in any of the ratings shows, for better or worse, how far down the ratings the Explorers are.
Odds and ends after the jump.
-- Villanova is 60th in offensive efficiency, 47th in defensive efficiency and 166th in tempo at 67.2 possessions per 40 minutes. It's worth point out that the Wildcats have done this against the top-ranked strength of schedule in Division I by opponents' offense, and the 11th-ranked schedule by opponents' defense.
-- The Wildcats are 11th in offensive rebounding percentage, 39th in free throw rate, No. 1 in free throw percentage and 49th in the ratio of threes to all field goal attempts. On defense, they're 31st in turnover percentage forced, 28th in offensive rebounding percentage given up, 50th in 2-point FG percentage given up, 81st in block percentage and 34th in steal percentage. 'Nova is also 284th in 3-point percentage given up and 319th in the ratio of threes to all field goals given up.
-- Curtis Sumpter is 80th in the percentage of his team's possessions while he's on the floor where he takes the shot. Dante Cunningham is 62nd in effective FG percentage, and Scottie Reynolds is 53rd in assist rate.
-- Temple is 40th in offensive efficiency (that's what you get for a high-scoring week!), 257th in defensive efficiency and 85th in tempo at 69.4 possessions per 40 minutes. The Owls are 39th in effective field goal percentage, 25th in turnover percentage when they have the ball (i.e. they don't give it up much), 63rd in 3-point percentage, 46th in 2-point percentage, fifth in the nation in steal percentage on offense (again, not many) and 79th in the ratio of threes to all field goals made. The defense is at the lower end of middling, highlighted by the 276th-place rank in offensive rebounding percentage given up.
-- Dionte Christmas is 41st in the country in offensive rating and 35th in effective field goal percentage. Dion Dacons is 59th in effective field goal percentage. Dustin Salisbery is 98th in the percentage of his team's possessions when he's on the floor in which he takes the shot.
-- St. Joe's is 68th in offensive efficiency, 147th in defensive efficiency and 306th in tempo at 62.3 possessions per 40 minutes. The Hawks are 90th in effective FG percentage, 50th in offensive rebound percentage, 62nd in free throw rate, 29th in 3-point FG percentage and 99th in block percentage on offense (i.e., they don't get blocked much). On defense, they are 99th in effective FG percentage given up, 86th in free throw rate given up, 80th in 3-point FG percentage given up, 68th in block percentage forced and 64th in the ratio of threes to all field goals given up.
-- Ahmad Nivins is 52nd in effective FG percentage, 87th in offensive rebounding percentage and 16th in free throw rate. Pat Calathes is 70th in defensive rebounding percentage. D.J. Rivera is 74th in steal percentage.
-- Penn is 76th in offensive efficiency, 123rd in defensive efficiency and 105th in tempo at 68.5 possessions per 40 minutes. The Quakers are 66th in effective FG percentage, 97th in 3-point FG percentage, 61st in 2-point FG percentage (both of these despite their recent scoring woes) and 12th in the ratio of assists to field goals made. On defense, they're 86th in turnover percentage forced and 24th in steal percentage forced, but 247th in 3-point FG percentage given up.
-- Ibrahim Jaaber is 17th in the percentage of possible minutes in which he's on the floor, 94th in assist rate and 21st in steal percentage. Mark Zoller is 97th in effective free throw percentage, and Steve Danley remains 18th in free throw rate.
-- La Salle is 93rd in offensive efficiency, 290th in defensive efficiency and 122nd in tempo at 68.2 possessions per 40 minutes. The Explorers are fourth in the nation in offensive rebounding percentage, but are 301st in steal percentage when they have the ball. On defense, they are 305th in turnover percentage forced and 288th in block percentage forced.
-- Kimmani Barrett is 49th in offensive rating and 82nd in offensive rebounding percentage.
-- Drexel is 172nd in offensive efficiency, 24th in defensive efficiency and 243rd in tempo at 65.1 possessions per 40 minutes. The Dragons are 18th in free throw rate. On defense, they're 21st in effective FG percentage given up, 55th in offensive rebounding percentage given up, 10th in 2-point FG percentage given up, 26th in block percentage, 42nd in block percentage, 18th in the ratio of threes to all field goal attempts given up and 44th in the ratio of assists to field goals made given up.
-- Chaz Crawford is 76th in offensive rating, ninth in the nation in offensive rebounding percentage, 49th in defensive rebounding percentage and 13th in block percentage. Frank Elegar is 42nd in the percentage of his team's possessions when he's on the floor in which he take the shot, 83rd in defensive rebounding percentage and 63rd in free throw rate.
And that's it.
