Bilal Benn to transfer to Niagara

spl_bilal_benn.jpg

Dana Pennett O'Neil of the Daily News reports that sophomore guard Bilal Benn is transferring to Niagara. Benn averaged 1.9 points and 9.3 minutes in 28 games this past season.

I presume this is a playing time question, with big-time guards Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher coming to the Main Line next season. Niagara is coached by Philly guy Joe Mihailich, and went to the NCAA Tournament this past season where they won the play-in game. So for a Cardinal Dougherty grad, it makes sense as a destination.

Your thoughts?

Steve Hardings:

Sounds like a good move considering what
Nova has coming in.

Thanks for getting back to the hoop talk.

I absolutely despise the Penn Relays, the
crowds, and the traffic the whole event
causes.

Your coverage was terrific, I guess,
for those who care about it. I am curious
how many Relays fans there really are
who dont make it to the event. I would suspect
(although I cannot validate this) that all
hard core Relays fans actually show up
to view the event in person

To be honest, that's actually what I thought too going in. But the final pageview numbers actually averaged over 1,700 per day, which was higher even than the number I originally posted. I also got linked to on a few running websites, as well as other blogs in the Philly area.

So there may well be an audience.

Anthony:

off topic but.. Jonathan are you going to be covering the Drexel Men's Lax game tonight? I thought that was an awesome article in the inq today.

Jonathan Tannenwald [TypeKey Profile Page]:

I really wanted to, but I'm stuck at a desk for the night. You're right, though, that Ray Parrillo's story was great.

And it's not at all off-topic. I've written about it already; you can find the post by clicking on the Drexel category.

I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

In addition to the blog, I host and produce the Inquirer's College HoopsCast. It's a weekly podcast that features all the latest news and analysis from around local and national college basketball. Regular guests include Inquirer writers Mike Jensen, Joe Juliano and Mel Greenberg.

I also occasionally contribute to the Inquirer's women's basketball weblog, Women's Hoops Guru. If you've come here from there, this blog deals mostly with the men's side of things, though I do write about women's basketball and other sports when they fit in.

When not focusing on college hoops, I host and produce the Inquirer's PhilliesCast with Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, and can occasionally be found behind the camera shooting videos of the Eagles, other professional sports teams and the tiger cubs at the zoo.

One of the great things about City Series basketball, and college basketball as a whole, is its sense of community. So I want to hear from you. Post a comment or send me an email by clicking on my name above. But don't be profane, and don't post hate speech. I'm sure you'd like to take a shot at that commenter on the opposite side of a rivalry from you, or say something nasty about a team you don't like. But this blog isn't the place for it. Thanks.
