Should Charlie Weis be fired?

1103_weis2.jpg

I mean, Tyrone Willingham never lost to Navy. Nor did any of the coaches in the 38 years before Willingham's arrival in South Bend, Ind., going back to 1963 -- the last season before today that the Midshipmen beat the Irish.

Including the field goal Weis passed on from the 28-yard line with under a minute to go in regulation.

Plus the fact that Willingham's teams were never 1-8 at any point. They went 10-3, 5-7 and 6-6.

Yet after three years, Willingham was gone.

So what standard should Charlie Weis be held to?

And what must it have been like to be one of the hundreds of Midshipmen in the stands at Notre Dame Stadium today?

By the way, check out the trash talk from Temple fans already starting ahead of Penn State's visit here next week...

Jobeki:

Charlie "I ain't goin nowhere" Weis" should be held to the same standard as Ty Willingham. Who by the way left ND with a winning record. Let's just flip the scenario, if Ty Willingham had a 1-8 record do you think he would have been fired? Without question or hesitation. Weis' only response to this meltdown is ND is not getting talent like they use to? Did they not have Brady Quinn last year? When their second string QB left for Northern Illinois you could see the writing on the wall then.

Jack:

I don't think Weis should be fired unless they have a pretty good idea of who will replace him. Notre Dame has that luxury. Correct me if I'm wrong or let me know if you disagree with me, Jonathan, but I don't think they would have fired Willingham unless they knew they had Weis lined up. I don't think you have to live in the past and compare Weis to his predecessor when you consider his job status. I think you have to live in the present/future and compare him to his potential successor or successors. If there's nobody out there who they think will do a better job than Weis, why get rid of him?

Rich:

Notre Dame may have a national TV contract, and Philly may have a large Catholic population, but otherwise, nobody cares about Notre Dame. Let's move on to a more relevant topic.

Chris:

Rich - the fact that ND has a national TV contract demonstrates that they are relevant. You, sir, are irrelevant.

Chris - the fact that ND has a national TV contract only demonstrates that NBC is run by a bunch of boneheaded boobs who don't recognize irrelevancy or that the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company is a laughing stock in the college football world - with the possible exception of a hundred thousand or so ND fans, which makes for a pretty piss poor pitiful base with which to ink a multi-year contract with an average-to-below-average team like Losing Irish of ND.

Fred:

I really dont have a dog in this fight, but I offer my position:

I think its important for the college game to have ND be good every year.

That way the casual fan would be more inclined to "drop in" on a ND game. I had no interest in seeing the ND-Navy game yesterday given the state of the state of affairs of ND.

But college FB needs ND to be good, in the same way college BB needs Duke, UNC, and Kentucky to be good.

I think it adds to the mystique of the game.

Thats just my 2 cents.

On the Weis issue: He should be held to the same standard as others, including Ty Willingham and Bob Davie.

Are the current University President and AD the people that hired Charlie?

John:

If this season has demonstrated anything, it is that college football does not NEED Notre Dame to be successful. More people probably tuned in to the end of the Navy game yesterday than have watched ND on any Saturday this season. College football WANTS Notre Dame in the mix, but does not need them. This has been one of the most interesting seasons ever and Notre Dame is having its worst season.

Notre Dame will be hard pressed to find someone to replace Weis. What quality coach now would touch that job at this point? If this cupboard is bare, this would be a rebuilding job. And to fire another coach in three years of being handed the reins would be a clear sign that there would be no patience in rebuilding. It is one thing to fire Willingham, who had no prior connection to the program. Weis is a Notre Dame grad, so to fire him would show it has a win at all costs mentality.

Remember, Urban Meyer could have gone after that job instead of Florida. And he used to go at ND. Yes, the program can be restored like Southern Cal, but changes need to be made first and the coach is not one of them. That NBC contract is going to disappear when it expires adn when it does, they are going to wish they were no longer independent. The ND Board and alumni need to get a grip and allow the Irish to join the Big Ten or Big East while there is still room.

Glen:

Do the TV ratings people have a way
to find out how many people were
really watching ND-Navy?

As that game was ending, there was great action on other networks (LSU-Bama, Michigan-Mich St, etc.)

Tom:

I don't see a ton of Temple trash talk there - one post saying Temple will win, one post saying they hope Temple wins, and a third post that seems to be making fun of Anthony Gargano more than anything.

Anyway, screw Penn State - go Owls. Hopefully we'll do our talking on the field.

Jonathan Tannenwald [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Fair enough about the Temple fans. I put the post up right after the comments were opened and wasn't expecting the pace to tail off quite that quickly.

B Flint:

Weis has had 2 very solid recruiting seasons the past 2 years. If his team is still losing 2 years from now then you can talk about getting rid of him. He is still fixing what Ty had messed up - namely poor recruiting.

Jonathan Tannenwald is a producer with Philly.com.

I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

In addition to the blog, I host and produce the Inquirer's College HoopsCast. It's a weekly podcast that features all the latest news and analysis from around local and national college basketball. Regular guests include Inquirer writers Mike Jensen, Joe Juliano and Mel Greenberg.

I also occasionally contribute to the Inquirer's women's basketball weblog, Women's Hoops Guru. If you've come here from there, this blog deals mostly with the men's side of things, though I do write about women's basketball and other sports when they fit in.

When not focusing on college hoops, I host and produce the Inquirer's PhilliesCast with Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, and can occasionally be found behind the camera shooting videos of the Eagles, other professional sports teams and the tiger cubs at the zoo.

One of the great things about City Series basketball, and college basketball as a whole, is its sense of community. So I want to hear from you. Post a comment or send me an email by clicking on my name above. But don't be profane, and don't post hate speech. I'm sure you'd like to take a shot at that commenter on the opposite side of a rivalry from you, or say something nasty about a team you don't like. But this blog isn't the place for it. Thanks.
