Line of the Day

I didn't see it or follow it live, but I have to think La Salle fans are just crushed tonight after the Explorers gave up a 12-point lead at Bucknell and lost by a point, 67-66. Ruben Guillandeaux had a chance to win it but his layup sat on the rim with three seconds left and rolled off.

I know that there are some Bison fans who read this blog and I'm sure they're ecstatic about stopping a four-game losing streak. But La Salle hit 14 threes, pulled down more rebounds (34-31), dished out more assists (11-9) and committed fewer turnovers (11-12).

By the way, the official box lists 34 and 31 rebounds but the Basketball State one lists 32 and 29 because it doesn't count the "team rebounds" stat. Either way, the Explorers come out on top by three.

Anyway, check out Darnell Harris' line in the loss:

Eric:

I was at the Bucknell-LaSalle game last night and it was one of the best games I've watched there in four years. Bucknell was down by 16 at one point mostly due to poor shooting by them and ridiculous 3-pt shooting by LaSalle. However, things evened-out somewhat in the second hald resulting in an awesome finish. It was a good game in that both teams hustled, were physical, and kept stupid mistakes to a minimum. However, a huge mental mistake was made by Darnell Harris as he inexplicably fouled John Griffin in front of the LaSalle bench, 75 feet away from the basket, with 8 seconds to go. This set up 1-and-1 free throws which Griffin calmly sank. I feel bad for LaSalle but am ecstatic for Bucknell because they have been playing undermanned the entire season, with one senior, one junior, two sophmores and three freshman as it's top seven players. It was a good win for a struggling team.

Matt:

Crushing loss for the Explorers. They could have really used this one. The talent seems to be there but they are fading at the end of games. Maybe it's youth, maybe it's nerves, I don't know. This year appears it will be a struggle but next year they get that big man transfer from Mississippi St and hopefully some of these young guys can step up their game. Nice win for the Bison.

Andy Rubin:

Do you know what the line is on our game tonight against Chapel Hill?

THANKS!

I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

In addition to the blog, I host and produce the Inquirer's College HoopsCast. It's a weekly podcast that features all the latest news and analysis from around local and national college basketball. Regular guests include Inquirer writers Mike Jensen, Joe Juliano and Mel Greenberg.

I also occasionally contribute to the Inquirer's women's basketball weblog, Women's Hoops Guru. If you've come here from there, this blog deals mostly with the men's side of things, though I do write about women's basketball and other sports when they fit in.

When not focusing on college hoops, I host and produce the Inquirer's PhilliesCast with Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, and can occasionally be found behind the camera shooting videos of the Eagles, other professional sports teams and the tiger cubs at the zoo.

One of the great things about City Series basketball, and college basketball as a whole, is its sense of community. So I want to hear from you. Post a comment or send me an email by clicking on my name above. But don't be profane, and don't post hate speech. I'm sure you'd like to take a shot at that commenter on the opposite side of a rivalry from you, or say something nasty about a team you don't like. But this blog isn't the place for it. Thanks.
