Temple: Fran Dunphy, Mark Tyndale and Chris Clark
St. Joseph's: Phil Martelli

Inquirer staff writer Ray Parrillo's early recap

Mark Tyndale admitted after the game that he felt Temple deserved some sort of revenge for the Owls' controversial loss to St. Joe's earlier in the season.

Tonight, he got it.

Tyndale delivered the game-winning basket with 22 seconds left, and 9-6 Temple now sits alone in second place in the Atlantic 10 after its 57-56 win over St. Joe's. The Hawks fell to fourth place in the conference below Massachusetts, and are even with the Minutemen, Richmond and La Salle at 8-6.

The Owls shot 21-for-50 from the field (42.0%), including 7-for-20 from three-point range (35.0%) and 14-for-30 from two-point range (46.7%), and 8-for-11 from the free throw line (72.7%). Eight offensive rebounds, 23 defensive rebounds, 12 assists, 11 turnovers, four blocks, five steals and 13 fouls committed.

That adds up to 59 possessions and 0.962 points per possession.

St. Joe's shot 20-for-52 from the field (38.5%), including a frigid 2-for-16 from three-point range (12.5%) and 18-for-36 from two-point range (50.0%), and 14-for-16 from the free throw line (87.5%). Ten offensive rebounds, 22 defensive rebounds, six assists, nine turnovers, seven blocks and five steals.

That adds up to 58 possessions and 0.972 points per possession.

Just as significantly, after scoring 24 points in the paint in the first half, the Hawks only scored six from there in the second half. At the other end of the floor, Temple scored six points in the paint in the first half and 20 in the second.

Line of the Game goes to the guy who took the thing on his back in the second half and carried the Owls to the win:

So as I head off to sleep, I leave you with this question:

What does finishing second in the Atlantic 10 get you this year?

Honestly, I have no idea.

I'm waiting for that St. Joes fans to present a doctored photo of the clock expiring before Tyndale could get the shot off.

Second place in the A-10 gets us (Temple) squat, unless we can make a run from here to the A-10 finals. However, I can see lesser teams (in the standings) get at-large bids. I can see Rhodey still making it, I can see UMass possibly getting in if they have a good tourney run.

However, I think we (again, Temple) have too many bad losses (Providence, Coll of Charleston OOC, plus Fordham, Charlotte in conference) to get in based on our A-10 record alone.

Bottomline, too many close losses I'd LOVE to have back:
2 pt loss to Providence
3 pt loss to Charleston
2 pt loss @ Akron
2 pt loss at Charlotte
1 pt loss vs St Joe's
2 point loss vs Fordham

That's 12 points and 6 losses away from an at-large bid. Ouch.

callie:

So I guess Philly's hopes for an NCAA team fall back on Villanova again!

jeremy sussberg:

Clearly this has been a down year for the city.

On paper Nova has the best team, but the team fizzled in the conference.

SJU has hit the wall. The loss at home to St Louis killed them.

Temple continues to improve and is rarely blown out or not in a close game. Great job by Dunphy this year.

LaSalle has improved, but as always, they seem to get any attention. Still they are a middle of the road team.

Penn has been horrific. Even playing in such a weak league, they have managed to get drilled a few times. And the alums are growling about Miller. Very disappointing.

Drexel: Bottom feeder in the CAA.

Sussberg Awards:
City Player of the year: Tyndale. Runner up: Calathes and Harris

City Coach of the Year: Dunphy: Team has gotten better as the season has gone on.

Embarassment of the Year: Penn. Thumped at Brown. Lost to Florida Gulf Coast, which speaks for itself around here.

I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

In addition to the blog, I host and produce the Inquirer's College HoopsCast. It's a weekly podcast that features all the latest news and analysis from around local and national college basketball. Regular guests include Inquirer writers Mike Jensen, Joe Juliano and Mel Greenberg.

I also occasionally contribute to the Inquirer's women's basketball weblog, Women's Hoops Guru. If you've come here from there, this blog deals mostly with the men's side of things, though I do write about women's basketball and other sports when they fit in.

When not focusing on college hoops, I host and produce the Inquirer's PhilliesCast with Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, and can occasionally be found behind the camera shooting videos of the Eagles, other professional sports teams and the tiger cubs at the zoo.

One of the great things about City Series basketball, and college basketball as a whole, is its sense of community. So I want to hear from you. Post a comment or send me an email by clicking on my name above. But don't be profane, and don't post hate speech. I'm sure you'd like to take a shot at that commenter on the opposite side of a rivalry from you, or say something nasty about a team you don't like. But this blog isn't the place for it. Thanks.
