Big win for St. Joe's

It got a little hairy at the end, but that win puts St. Joe's right back on the bubble. Not on the right side of it yet, but beating Xavier was an enormous step in the right direction.

I can't help asking, though: Why rush the court? I'd like to think the Hawks are good enough for a home win over Xavier to not be that big a deal, even if the Musketeers are ranked No. 11 in the country.

I have no problems with a court-storming if you win the conference tournament or even the regular season title in a game, but I honestly believe tonight's win doesn't rise to that level.

Then again, if the students wanted it that badly, who am I to argue against it that much.

Jonathan, generally I'm an avowed non-supporter of court rushing. But the Hawks are playing the 8th ranked team in the nation at the last game in the storied Fieldhouse, after a crushing loss to Temple, with Jameer Nelson, Dr. Jack Ramsey, Jim Lynam, Mike Bantom, Cliff Anderson, Bernard Blunt and Rap Curry in the house.

Lose and it's NIT for sure. Win and send the fieldhouse out in style and keep faint NCAA at-large hopes alive.

I was there - it was court-rush worthy.

Eric:

I don't recall you questioning LaSalle and Temple fans rushing the court following their respective wins.

This was the biggest win in the Fieldhouse in the post-Jameer era. To top it off, it was Senior night, great figures from throughout St. Joe's history were in the house, and the place was rocking all night long.

It was completely worthy of a rushing in my eyes.

Also, that was the highest ranked team ever to be defeated in the Fieldhouse.

Kate:

Did you question Temple rushing the court at the Palestra on Sunday night when their students/fans rushed the court after defeating the un-ranked Hawks? This was a wonderful night at the Fieldhouse celebrating Hawk Basketball's past, present and future. The atmosphere was electric with baskethball legends and a fabulous game. The students, alumni and this team deserved their moment after defeating the #8 team in the land. I was thrilled to see them have that experience and have one last magical moment on Hawk Hill. The Hawk Will Never Die!

tjc:

I have a feeling the Hawk will be dying right around the A-10 tourney quarterfinals.

Four letters: ESPN

I don't understand why people care if kids rush the court. They are kids and that was the Hawks biggest win in a while. Who cares?

Penn rushed to court when they beat the worst Temple team in 25 years. So what?

nick:

You rush the court when you beat ranked teams in big games, or rivals in close games.

That being said, hawks fans definitely deserved to rush the court one last time at the feildhouse. My question is, if the fieldhouse is such a historic place, why does St. Joes play so many games at the palestra? Is the seating differential between the two that big?

I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

In addition to the blog, I host and produce the Inquirer's College HoopsCast. It's a weekly podcast that features all the latest news and analysis from around local and national college basketball. Regular guests include Inquirer writers Mike Jensen, Joe Juliano and Mel Greenberg.

I also occasionally contribute to the Inquirer's women's basketball weblog, Women's Hoops Guru. If you've come here from there, this blog deals mostly with the men's side of things, though I do write about women's basketball and other sports when they fit in.

When not focusing on college hoops, I host and produce the Inquirer's PhilliesCast with Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, and can occasionally be found behind the camera shooting videos of the Eagles, other professional sports teams and the tiger cubs at the zoo.

One of the great things about City Series basketball, and college basketball as a whole, is its sense of community. So I want to hear from you. Post a comment or send me an email by clicking on my name above. But don't be profane, and don't post hate speech. I'm sure you'd like to take a shot at that commenter on the opposite side of a rivalry from you, or say something nasty about a team you don't like. But this blog isn't the place for it. Thanks.
