Want to know why every seat was filled on your last airline flight, and the flight before that, and the flight before that etc.? One answer is in a Bloomberg News story this morning. If you're an airline investor, you should like what the story says. If you're a customer, maybe not.

Dear Mr. Belden:
Do you forsee 24-hour airline schedules within the next ten years? They would seem a lot less costly than building more runways.
Sincerely,
Jim Ryan
Jim,
Good question, and the answer is: It seems unlikely that airlines will go to 24-hour schedules. The reason they don't have many now is because they think demand would be light, making it uneconomical. They would need to staff airports and their centrralized flight-control centers at hours they don't now. The logistics of scheduling flights overnight also would make hub-and-spoke operations more difficult. The only reason carriers now do West Coast to the East "redeyes" is because of the distance and the need to reposition planes for the next morning.
