The closest gas station (self-service) nearest the PHL International Airport is located approximately 2miles away at Island Avenue & Elmwood. Take exit 13 (Island Avenue) from I-95 South (the same exit you'd take for the Platt Bridge) but stay in the right lane and go straight, through 5 traffic lights, and a Hess station will magically appear on the left. The return trip to the Airport is simplier because you then head in the opposite direction and make your entrance to I-95 after the 5th light. It is a right turn and very well marked.
RESPONSE FROM TOM: We knew about the Island Avenue station but didn't include it because the neighborhood isn't very inviting at night. We received an e-mail in response to the print version of the column from a reader who thought the same thing about the safety of the area. We would suggest finding one of the alternatives if the hour is late.

When are they going to do something about parking at PHL? With all the folks flying, the parking lot is a disaster.
Any idea how often they check for cars that have been abandoned? Do they at least check to be sure all cars are current?
Alright. Must stop. Otherwise I'll start thinking about walking into the terminal and the lights being out and elevators missing buttons, etc.
God I hate PHL.
