I don't want to end on a sour note, but since my trip did, what can I say?
I was told yesterday afternoon in Seattle, when I asked for a longer layover in Philadelphia, that I'd have to pick up my bags and then recheck them in Charlotte.
But when I checked in last night, the agent said it was no problem and that the bags would be sent along to Philadelphia directly.
So I get home. I go to baggage claim. I wait. The bags spill out onto the carousel. Everyone's but mine.
I wonder, maybe another cartful is on its way. I wonder this for half an hour and then finally go to the baggage claim desk.
"Are any more bags going to be unloaded from Charlotte?"
The agent looks at my claim check. Searches in the computer.
"No."
She searches in the computer some more.
"Your bags arrived early."
Normally, arriving early would be a good thing. Except I've just wasted 45 minutes waiting for nothing. I missed two trains into the city that would have brought me home to my turkeys, figurative and literal, sooner.
Ok. Not a big deal.
I follow the agent's directions and find my bags up against a wall, guarded by a US Airways staffer.
I go to get my bags.
She snarls.
"What are you doing?"
"These are my bags."
"Where are your papers?" she growls.
I hand them over.
She turns her back on me and checks numbers, then snarls some more.
"Okay."
"May I please have my papers back?"
She snaps, "I'm going to give them to you."
I don't know.
Should I give this woman the benefit of the doubt?
Maybe she was just spent after a few very long days.
I know I was.
Nah.
She needs to find another line of work.
Have a great Thanksgiving.

For the past five or six years, I've flown several times a month on US Air from Philadelphia to LA and back. Never have had a problem, never had a delay more than 45 minutes. More often than not, the flight arrives 20 to 30 minutes early. The food choice is lousy, but I think it's a great airline.
