I enjoyed your article and I agree that USAirways has made great strives toward improving operations at PHL. They still have a ways to go so I'm optimistic.
One thing I never see reported and I have always wondered the effect it has on air traffic timely departures and arrivels is FAA air and ground holds. Road warriors like myself (I fly nationally every week) are alaways quick to blame the airlines but the FAA has a big hand in controlling the airports. So how often does the FAA place air or ground holds on airports therefore causing backups? Are these holds due to real situations where there are too many planes or not enough controllers for an airport or control center? With NY/NJ having 3 airports and MD/DC having 3 airports is Philly the fall guy who gets the short end of the stick? Most pilots I encounter hate flying in and out of PHL. I only wish I had an alternate airport to chose from.
