Almanac, Aug. 6

It appears that another plume of heat and humidity will settle over the region through midweek. As we mentioned below (see “Sirius Issues”), the non-technical term for this type of weather is “August.”

On this date in 1918, for example, the temperature soared to 103 in Philadelphia, a record for the date. That was just a warm-up. The very next day it reached a Phoenix-like 106.

The heat index might approach 100 tomorrow, but the actual temperatures are expected to get no higher than the mid-90s.
