On this date in 1989, an outbreak of severe weather generated powerful winds and spawned tornadoes.
A wind gust of 100 m.p.h. was reported in Malvern, and a two-day period 39 tornadoes touched down in the East.
That November turned wintry cold, with 4 inches of snow falling in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving.
The following month was one of the coldest Decembers on record, with widespread river icing.
The pattern flipped however, and from New Year’s Eve on, the winter was remarkably mild.
