Almanac, Nov. 9

An hors d’oeuvre for what was to come, on this date in 1976, the official temperature reached 23 at Philadelphia International Airport.

That year, it went all the way down to 15 on Nov. 30, and to 9 on Dec. 3. Right before Christmas, it turned dead-of-winter cold, and the frigid weather persisted as river icing became a problem.

The following January would become one of the coldest months on record in Philadelphia and elsewhere, with record-low temperatures from the Ohio Valley to the East Coast.
