Freeze At Last!

At long last the temperature did reach 32 at Philadelphia International Airport this morning, its first visit of the season to the freezing mark.

While we usually associated that first freeze with Halloween, waiting until the second week of November for that momentous occasion is in keeping with recent trends.

Below (see Almanac, Nov. 8) we made note of the record set on Election Day 1960.

We would add that during the 1960s, one of the coldest decades in the period of record, on average the first freeze was arriving on Oct. 25.
