Almanac, Dec. 4

During an extraordinary balmy spell in 1998, the temperature reached 73, which, at the time, was the highest official reading ever recorded in December in Philadelphia.

That distinction did not last long, for the temperature reached a record 73 once again three days later, on Dec. 7.

That finally brought on end to a warm spell that began on Nov. 28, with the temperature reaching 60 on eight of the next nine days.

On Christmas Eve, however, snow was on the ground.
