La Nina Winters

Going through various yellowing records, Tony Gigi at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly has assembled a list of winters influenced by moderate and strong La Ninas.

The list holds out some hope for the winter-phile. One of the moderate La Nina winters, 1909-1910, featured a 21-inch snowstorm on Christmas and the day after.

During the strong La Nina winter of 1916-17, snowfall was almost twice that of long-term averages.

Here is the list, along with seasonal snow totals. The winters of 1873-74 and 1875-76 are not included because snow-total data was not available.

Moderate:

1892-3, 36.3
1909-10, 36.1
1910-11, 28.5
1942-43, 16.3
1945-46, 18.7
1950-51, 4.6
1954-55, 12.1
1964-65, 26.2
1970-71, 18.3
1984-85, 16.5
