Vitamin D Shortage

If you are sensitive to light deprivation, the forecast for the next several days isn’t encouraging.

A touch of snow or that holiday favorite – "wintry mix" -- is possible this afternoon, and then clouds and a chance of some precipitation are in the National Weather Service outlook from here to Thursday.

Aside from aesthetic considerations, a healthy cloud cover this time of year can be literally unhealthy for some people.

While it is normal to feel uninspired on December days when even the dimming sun is obscured by clouds, a small percentage of the population suffers from serious depression wrought by Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Here is a brief description of the phenomenon and what can be done about it.

In addition, the weak sun inhibits the body’s ability to produce Vitamin D. When it’s cloudy, that ability is further inhibited. You can read more about that here.

Any precipitation between now and Wednesday is expected to be light, but a storm of more consequence may show up Wednesday night or Thursday.
