A Royal Bummer

tony%20soprano.jpgSo what's the bigger disappointment?

Last night's The Sopranos?

Or the Phillies in Kansas City?

If you're reading this blog, you're a Phillies fan (or you're lost). And that means your stomach turned yesterday as you watched the Royals crush the Phillies, 17-5, at Kauffman Stadium. You always hear baseball players and coaches say, "If they're wearing big-league uniforms, they can beat you." There is truth in that -- anybody can beat anybody -- but there's no hiding the fact the Royals are a very, very bad baseball team. And while Jimmy Rollins said a 4-2 road trip is a good road trip, you can't help but look at this weekend's series as a lost opportunity. While it is true that great teams lose to teams like the Royals, great teams also do not consistently surrender momentum like the Phillies.

The latest Philliescast is up.

Jose Mesa had a less than impressive Phillies debut. Also in my Phillies notes: Ryan Howard continues to work on his swing, while Brett Myers said he will throw off the mound tomorrow. He still thinks he can return to the bullpen by next Monday.

Three thoughts on last night's The Sopranos:

- Did anybody else think to themselves, "How much space does Meadow need to park her car? She could park a boat in that spot!"
- It's probably just me, but I enjoyed the moment when the kid threw up upon seeing Phil's head crushed by his SUV.
- I didn't hate the ending, although at first I was like, "What the hell?" Why does everything need a tidy ending? I like it's openendedness.

Seattle Mariners centerfielder Ichiro Suzuki on Cleveland, from the Seattle Times:

"To tell the truth, I'm not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to. If I ever saw myself saying I'm excited going to Cleveland, I'd punch myself in the face, because I'm lying."

The Phillies visit Cleveland a week from today.

Josh:

If only the Phillies season had cut to black at the end of the Mets series, like the Sopranos ended last night. We'd be left to think of the possibilities instead of watching the reality.

I hope that wasn't too deep for a Monday.

jimmymack:

Think Charlie has visions of rolling Leiber's truck over some peoples heads (Gillick, Steve Smith, his bullpen)? That would be a bigger draw than dollar dog night.
And isn't Meadow's car the Lexus that parks itself?
The ending of the game and the TV show both sucked.

I must be the only person in America that liked the ending of The Sopranos. It was basically, "life goes on". Its good to know that Tony wasn't offed, that he is still out there breaking the law somewhere.

Erich:

Did Jose Mesa REALLY say he was "glad to be back in Philadelphia"? I can't believe there's even one Phillies fan in the universe who could say that he/she/it- this covers ET, et al- is glad Mesa is back in Philly. Does he have a clue how much we hate him?!! This guy is liable to get booed just walking into a restaurant, not to mention walking onto the field at Citizens Bank Park! Store mannequins will give him the finger when he walks in. Why doesn't he just retire and collect his social security?!!
