Hawaiian Idol

brady%20bunch%20idol.jpgRemember the Hawaiian idol that almost killed Greg Brady while surfing?

Come on, it's only one of the scariest moments in TV history.

I'm thinking the Shane Victorino Hula Figurine has the opposite effect on people. Victorino smacked a game-winning, solo home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning yesterday in a 9-8 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park. I'm thinking the Phillies need hula figurines to keep Brett Myers and Tom Gordon healthy, Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton pitching effectively, Pat Burrell driving in runs and Charlie Manuel making the right moves.

It's worth a shot.

Garcia, coming off his best start of the season last week, had one of his worst. He allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. He also irritated fans when he made no effort to run to first base after he grounded out to second in the third inning. Garcia talked afterward about his poor performance this season.

I'm not sure what to make of Garcia. He seems very frustrated that he isn't pitching well -- he seems to have high expectations for himself -- but I also think he's ready to move on. He's a free agent after the season, so I asked him if he's concerned about how his performance could effect his market value. His response? "Hey, somebody is going to pay me." You know what? He's right. Somebody is going to pay him, and somebody is going to pay him a lot. I mean, Jason Marquis and Gil Meche got giant contracts and they had no track record to speak of.

But one thing is certain. Garcia hasn't lived up to the hype.

Pat Gillick squashed a rumor about possibly making a run at purchasing the Seattle Mariners. Of course, some in the jouranlism biz might call that a non-denial denial. He never said, "No." In the same Phillies notebook, Gordon said he isn't concerned about his role in the bullpen once he rejoins the team. That's a good thing because it's a lock Myers remains the closer the rest of the season.

It's a mad, mad, mad world when you're watching the Phillies. Phil Sheridan writes about that reality setting in.

Don't remember that episode of the Brady Bunch? First of all, shame on you. Second of all, I found it.

God bless YouTube.

Chilling, isn't it? I mean, especially when that scarrrry music played right before Greg fell of his board. Total goosebumps.

Mike:

a couple of stats i'm curious about: do the phils lead the league in first batter (of the game) home runs allowed? I think it's happened 3x on this homestand alone. two, they must be up there in allowing runs to the opponent in the next at-bat after scoring runs themselves. nothing is more deflating to a team than scratching out some runs and then the pitchers going out in the next half inning and giving them all right back.

as for garcia, i won't shed a tear when he goes. they rolled the dice- an exciting move- but it doesn't appear it's going to work out. maybe he'll make a strong second-half push in his contract year. if he wants to do it, and to his credit he says he does, i say ride him like a rented mule...

John in LA:

Couple things - Molina's reaction to Howard's swing was priceless, and the last quote from Garcia says it all - "For people here, everything is a big deal."

He's the second coming of Vincente Padilla.

Al Pacino said it best in the Godfather.."they keep pulling me back in"...no matter how much you want to walk away disgusted, they play like Saturday and yesterday (despite Garcia and Madson)and you get hope again. Crowd at both games was so much fun, everyone was into it. Thankfully I missed Friday night, I was out looking for the stolen bats.
Now Freddy....try to look like a pro, at least trot down to first base...the names you were called in the stands were enough to make a drill sargent blush. I would hope that a coach or player might get on you but this team doesn't have leader on the character side, so I guess nothing was mentioned.
Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out of town, loser.

Goosbumps for sure, just like the Phillies.
