Phillies Sign Romero

The Phillies just announced they have signed lefthander J.C. Romero to a minor-league contract.

Romero will work out with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Phillies for the immediate future, but Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said they hope Romero can help them soon. Romero had a 3.15 ERA in 23 appearances this season for the Boston Red Sox, but he also allowed 24 hits and 15 walks in 20 innings. When I first heard the Red Sox had released Romero on June 18, I did not think the Phillies would be interested. But Amaro said because of the lack of lefthanders in the minor-league system -- lefthander Matt Smith has been shut down because of elbow problems -- they felt it was a good opportunity.

Todd, I'm with you. I didn't initially think the team would be interested. But, it seems the bullpen woes have gotten so bad, Pat Gillick's simply signing any pseudo-live arm, and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. As a lefty, he has inherently more value than the normal cast of castoffs -- Alfonseca, Mesa, et al. But, only time will tell. Worth a shot.

Anonymous:

I think after his first misadventure, Mesa has pitched fairly well, and Alfonseca has done just about all that has been asked of him as a closer in the absence of Myers and Gordon. Troublke starts with inconsistancy in Madson (who turned in a solid two scoreless innings last night), and Geary.

The rest of the pen catches "BP Disease" [batting Practice Disease] from each other like cases of the trots spread through a third grade classroom. One guy goes to the mound and gets lit up, they all come in and emulate him.

Pitiful, and a terrible black mark against Gillick's record!

Joe:

More then half of this teams payroll does not play either because of injury (garcia, gordon, myers, leiber total 29mil) or 13mil for burrell who needs a change of scenery, then there is thome's 5mil. So basically this team has approximately a 48 million dollar payroll. And yet with the money being made at CBP these owners still will not give gillick approval to increase the payroll. They have to know if gillick makes a trade for a pitcher to improve this team it give the team a better chance in a very winnable division. With that comes more fans in the stands and more money in their pockets.
