Phillies Acquire Mateo

The 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline has passed.

And?

The Phillies acquired relief pitcher Julio Mateo from the Seattle Mariners for double-A Reading infielder Jesus Merchan.

Mateo will join double-A Reading in a move that the Phillies said adds inventory.

Mateo is 18-12 with a 3.68 ERA in parts of six seasons with the Mariners. He opened this season with the Mariners and went 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in nine appearances before Seattle suspended him earlier this season for 10 games without pay after being arrested after a dispute with his wife in a Manahattan hotel. According to a story by The Associated Press in May, "The 6-foot, 220-pound pitcher was arrested the day before on a charge of third-degree assault. He posted bond and was released. Police said his wife needed five stitches to her mouth."

The Mariners optioned him to triple-A Tacoma, where he is 3-1 with a 0.79 ERA and 12 saves. Opponents have hit just .200 against him.

Merchan hit .330 with seven home runs and 44 RBIs in 81 games for Reading.

Pete:

Please call the domestic violence groups with whom the Phillies worked, after the Brett Myers incident, and ask them what they think about the team's empty words now.

jimmymack:

Nice trade, not bad, way to go Pat.

The woman's groups will be after him big time when/if he is called up and will resurrect the whole Brett Myers situation.

Deb:

Oh please...I don't care. I just want to win! :) Seriously, it may have been a one time deal, a la Brett. It be one thing if he had done this several times. But I just want to win...I think I'd be ok with Hitler on the team if he could pitch well.

any word of victorino's mri or bourn's x-ray yet?

artistsatwork:

Maybe they got him as an instruction manual for local surgeons.
Wikipedia sez: "Mateo broke his fourth metacarpal (ring finger) on his left hand while lifting weights, and missed the reminder of the 2006 season."

Domestic violence is never a "one time deal" (see Deb's comment, above). I think, perhaps, this is the wrong kind of synergy to develop in the pitching staff . . .

As a baseball move this ain't bad. But gosh, how many accused wife abusers does this team need? The off-the-field peripherals are not insignificant, folks, and I hope that this team keeps a close eye on these guys.

Turd Ferguson:

Domestic Violence is a big time issue. So is baseball. Welcome Mr Mateo!!!!!

Don/University City:

After two decent deals with the White Sox and Reds, Gillick comes up small in his achilles heal--the bullpen. We get Mateo, who can't even make the team at the outset; the Braves get Dotel, a bonafide set-up man and potential closer if Wickman continues to struggle. Guess all our set-up eggs are in the Gordon/Mesa basket. How does that make you feel?

Johan:

Mateo reminds me of the Urbina trade. Getting another teams mental case. We all know where Urbina is now. Gillick seems like a double agent stocking up his future team with prospects.
