The Milestone Must Wait

kendrick%204.jpgIt looks like some people came to watch the Phillies make history last night at Citizens Bank Park.

But then Kip Wells showed up and started to throw baseballs.

The Phillies avoided their 10,000th loss in franchise history last night with a 13-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. I was not aware, but Bob Ford writes about all the ceremonies that had to be delayed as a result. Maybe the black balloons will fly tonight.

There was a banner hanging over the second deck that read: "7 Stadiums, 52 managers, 2,150 players, 10,000 loses."

To whom it may concern, it's losses.

Not loses.

What a looser.

Charlie Manuel reiterated yesterday that he needs pitching help.

Read some previous blog posts here and here to understand why the Phillies cannot expect to make the postseason unless they bolster their pitching staff.

Photos from last night's game.

Tom Gordon will throw a bullpen session tomorrow at Citizens Bank Park and if he feels well he could join the team next week in Los Angeles.

He could help, if he is healthy.

Sammi:

Todd, I am dubious about trade possibilities right now - I fear we will give up Rowand for someone like Garcia or Eaton. I'd rather wait for free agency and next year, keep what we have, pay money (not trade talent) to buy the best starter and relief pitcher available, move Myers back to the rotation, and sue that !@#$%^& Garcia for fraud. However, since management will not be that sensible, give us a few realistic trade possibilities for pitching help that actually could happen (God help us!) and your assessment of their likelihood and merit.
Thanks, Sammi

Well it is a dubious distinction for a Philly fan and with my Sunday plan in place for the Phillies, I am suddenly faced with the fact that I may be present at 'the game' that everyone has been talking about. That of course the 10,000 losses game! It would be a thrill, an honor, my Phillies civic duty to be at that game!

Read about some history of the Phillies back in 1883 on my blog about Philly sports

p.s. Even Adam Eaton's name would be famous if he was the losing pitcher for 'the game' - is it the Phillies record books calling him?
