Brett Myers needs your help.
You see, Mariano Rivera and Billy Wagner enter games to Metallica's "Enter Sandman." Trevor Hoffman enters to AC/DC's "Hells Bells." Eric Gagne enters to Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle." Milwaukee's Francisco Cordero enters to Salvia's "Click, Click Boom."
Even Charlie Sheen's character Rick Vaughn in Major League entered to The Troggs' "Wild Thing."
Closers love their intro music.
Fans love it, too.
Myers has used both White Zombie's "Children of the Grave" and The Outlaws' "(Ghost) Rider in the Sky" as his intro music this season. But neither has really stuck and Myers has thought about what else he could use. That situation came to a head during last night's 6-4 victory over the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park, where neither White Zombie or The Outlaws were played before he struck out the side to earn his eighth save.
No, Myers got KC & the Sunshine Band's "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" instead.
"It (ticked) me off," Myers said.
"They need to do a poll in the paper to tell people to pick my dang song," he added.
So what are you waiting for?
What should the Phillies play for Myers as he leaves the bullpen?
And assume that the entire KC & the Sunshine Band catalog has been chucked out the window.
*
I tried telling Myers the other day that he needs to pick a song that people know, so they can get into it. That means nothing obscure. So here are three songs to get the ball rolling: Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle," George Thorogood & The Destroyers' "Who Do You Love?," and Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower."
*
There seemed to be a little more buzz in the clubhouse last night. I think that's becaue Kyle Lohse pitched well -- four runs in 6 1/3 innings isn't a quality start, but he never seemed to be in real serious trouble -- and Antonio Alfonseca, Tom Gordon and Myers pitched very well in relief.
The Phillies have a 3.39 ERA in their last 21 games (14-7). In the last 18 games in which they have pitched, Phillies relievers have a 2.18 ERA.
*
Don't look now, but the Phillies moved into second place in the NL wild card standings. They're just one game behind the San Diego Padres.
*
Jim Salisbury considers Barry Bonds' record tainted. Ryan Howard does not. Phil Sheridan says people shouldn't be foolish enough to think the steroid era has ended. Would you want to be Mike Bacsik, and be part of the highlight reel forever?
*
We Should Be GM's lets us know that former Phillies pitcher Jay Baller got arrested ... for guns and cocaine.
*
Finger Food brings this to our attention: PETA loves the food at Citizens Bank Park. In fact, it's the best. They're not talking about the roast pork at Tony Luke's, either. They're talking about the fake steak at Rick's Steaks.
I agree with Finger Food. If I want to avoid meat, I avoid meat. I don't go for a fake cheesesteak, cheeseburger or whatever. Of course, being from Wisconsin, I think I'd dishonor my family if I swore off meats encased in pig intestines. I mean, can you imagine?
*
If you wonder why Scott Stapp is famous -- in my opinion, Creed ranks up there with Nickelback as The Worst Band Ever -- you will enjoy this discussion at Randball.

todd - want an effective intro for myers? how
'bout a seldom heard song that was actually derived from the trumpets and fanfare used to introduce matadors? for over who-knows how many centuries.
check out a 60's recording by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass - "The Lonely Bull" - Herb Alpert (the "A" of A&M Records) even mixed in crowd noises with the trumpets.
might work.

Todd - you won me over for life by replicating my own never-ending debate over the worst band ever. As far as Brett's intro music is concerned, I've always wished someone would use "Don't Fear the Reaper" by the Blue Oyster Cult. It's not quite as anthemic as a lot of closer songs but that guitar riff is one of the best ever.

I like the Rolling Stones Sympathy for the Devil keyed up to "Please allow me to introduce myself" and some lyrics which are pretty powerful OR Social Distortions version of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire or some kind of theme music like James Bond's theme or the Peter Gunn theme by the Blues Brothers
I think that we need to go with something that is considered local and has some irony like:
Bruce Springstein's Santa Claus is coming to town
1. It is local and many people are familiar with it.
2. It has the whole Santa Claus connection which Philly fans are infamous for - it takes a bad incident and turns it around as an in your face to other teams.
3. It is totally unique
4. It's Bruce!
5. Look at the words, it is pretty intimidating:
You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

For the 80s cheese factor you could always go with Europe's "The Final Countdown"
For a local angle, you've got "Boom! Shake the Room" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
My best reference source is "Greatest Sports Rock And Jams" from my CD Collection. From that I must choose "The Power" by Snap.
If Brett decides to choose any of these, I ask only a small finders fee...Maybe a bullpen tour :-)

This wasn't brought up, but if Chase Utley is in the market for a new song, my wife an I have always thought he should use Volcano by Jimmy Buffet. In the middle of the song, he calls out to Mr. Utley (his keyboard player). It always makes me think of Chase.

Wanna know what would send chills up everybody's spine?
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Yes, it's a couple years old, but it's a catchy tune still fresh in everybody's mind, and it's just metal enough for J. Priest and Maiden fans to appreciate.
Think about it -- the low boom of Jack White's guitar with the bass-like octave effect; the marching drum beat; and, of course, the explosion of sound when he rips into the meat of the song with that dirty-sounding riff.
I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back...

+1 for Seven Nation Army. It's one of those songs that everyone in the crowd could stomp their feet to.
Love the blog Todd, and I couldn't agree with you more on Nickelback and Creed being the WORST bands of all time. I currently give the edge to Nickelback. Their 15 minutes of fame has laster waaaaaaaaayyyy too long.

Maybe somebody could find a Queens of the Stone Age song that rocks pretty hard - I would nominate "Sick, Sick, Sick" but that lacks the proper build-up that entrance music requires. It kind of just starts.
That, and I don't think that has as much widespread recognition. So scratch that.
Heh - how about this as a comedy option: Nine Inch Nails - "Closer"

Oldies but goodies, high energy division
"Can't Touch This" by Hammer
"Sympathy for the Devil" (another vote)
"Let's go crazy" - Prince
"Gimme Shelter' -Stones
"Time Has Come Today" - The Chambers Brothers (long version has great instrumental mix, and ticking clock is great for a releiver)

Here's one that's not well known, but is up-and-coming. Muse is probably the hottest band in the UK right now.
First, check out the video for the song here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrsMPpW6q2E
(Yes, that's the same actor that plays Joe Chill in the last Batman movie..)
And of course the best part of the lyrics here make this a fist-pumping anthem:
No one's gonna take me alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive

some good one mentioned so far- i think i like "sympathy for the devil" most of those suggested.
but you really need something that will make people aggressive and angry (well, more aggressive and angry than usual). probably need to go '80s heavy metal for that. i'm not a fan, but there is motley crue's "wild side" which has a good intro. i know brett's from jacksonville and one of the coasts down in florida is called "the paradise coast" so guns n roses "paradise city" is a possibility. as a nod to the hometown, if jax is on the paradise coast that is.
my choice would be old-school metallica's "master of puppets" though. it's got a very heavy and long instrumental opening and the chorus fits the closer role perfectly: "obey your master!", and "master of puppets- i'm pulling your string", and so on and so forth.
there are tons of choices- but "shake your booty" is definitely not one of them. that guy or gal should be fired immediately.

Amazing how many responses the call for songs gets...
Victorino's comments re: whether or not Bonds used steroids are moronic. Stick to what you know, Shane - Spam and Don Ho. I'm reaching here, but he probably also doesn't believe all that "nonsense" about Global Warming. Or cigarettes being bad for you. Or gravity. "Issac Newton - I hate him! I hate him!" You might want to slip a copy of "Game of Shadows' into his locker, Todd.
And as to pitchers giving up historic homers - somebody that regularly talks OPS and WHIP might, but the average fan doesn't. At all. Who gave up Bonds 73rd? Ruth's 60th? Maris' 61st?
That was a test. If you answered any of those corectly, I suggest you immediately drop what you're doing and go kiss a girl. Or boy.

A closers song should be familar and intimidating. Upbeat is good but not required (Hells Bells, the beginning, is actually slow). But it should also reflect Myers taste..so it would be helpful to know what kind of music he favors. After all, he has to like coming out to it.
I like the idea of "Don't Fear the Reaper". Imagine hearing that rift start and he comes jogging out.
I also like the song Bodies by Drowning Pool. Papelbon used it when he first started but no more, so no duplication. It is good for the lyrics "let the bodies hit the floor", upbeat, and somewhat familar.
I agree with the person that said "Sympathy for the Devil" but only if it was cued exactly to the spot where it says "Please allow me to introduce myself".
How about Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi? Kind of local. If you use the long version, the first lines are perfect, straight from the movie Young Guns:
Jack Palance: "You are not a God"
Emilo Estivez: "Why don't you pull the trigger and find out?"
Then the nice slow music, good for taking the mound. Has a nice gunslinger motif too, which fits a closer.

Not the typical song, but I think Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody would be cool. Obviously well known, but also if it starts a few minutes into the song (3:00 minutes in is a good spot), the part building up to "so you think you can stomp me and spit in my eye?" through to an ending of "Just gotta get out, Just gotta get right outta here" would be pretty exciting
can never go wrong with metallica and guns n roses too.

Another good Bon Jovi song would be "Raise Your Hands". The opening is very fast, guitar heavy. And the lyrics are great, especially the first few:
"Raise Your Hands"
You - you got a nasty reputation
We're in a sticky situation - it's down to me and you
So tell me - is it true ... they say there ain't nobody better
Well now that we're together
Show me what you can do
You're under the gun
Out on the run
Gonna set the night on fire
You're out on the run
Under the gun
And playin' to win
[Chorus:]
Raise your hands
When you want to let it go
Raise your hands
And you want to let a feeling show
Raise your hands
From New York to Chicago
Raise your hands
From New Jersey to Tokyo
Raise your hands

Myers is from Jacksonville, home of many a redneck icon (.38 Special, members of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Limp Bizkit), and I think Flirtin' with Disaster by Molly Hatchet would be perfect on multiple levels (which is why he'd never use it). I've got nothing good to say about Limp Bizkit and don't really know their catalog, but there's probably something appropriately aggro in there.

But my vote definitely goes with Brian and TJ for the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army. I don't understand how anybody could listen to that song and not want to kick some serious ass afterward! Plus, I have personal experience to vouch for it's intensity... we used it in college as an on-field warm up tune and it never failed to fire us up.

I think being the KISStard that I am. The opening of both 'Love Gun' and 'Psycho Circus' would be awesome. Love Gun with the machine gun intro and Psycho Circus with the opening verse. I like the idea of 'Running With the Devil' I think Hells Bells is taken, but that would be a good choice, or even Firestarter by Prodigy. I've got a million ideas.

So Todd, you gonna print off these comments and show them to Myers?
And to the folks who suggested Thunderstruck, that is out because it appears to be Cole Hamels music. Plus some other major leagues use it, including Smoltz with ATL. I maintain, that for a song to be effective it should be unique, meaning no one else is using it.
Oh, and I will NEVER stop with the Bon Jovi. :)

I came here to suggest "You Could Be Mine." By GnR. The song from Terminator 2. GREAT intro. But I also like the suggestion of "Seven Nation Army." Now I know this will get no love, but "Tweezer (Reprise)" by Phish would be awesome. If anyone out there knows the song, they know what I mean. Lastly, some shameless humor: anytime anyone comes out of the bullpen, to prepare us for the end results, perhaps it should be "Rape Me" by Nirvana.

Seconding the Beastie Boys love as well.
Anything from the Rocky soundtrack is kind of played out and not unique to Brett's situation. All the Philadelphia teams use the Rocky theme and Eye of the Tiger.
Anything by U2, Led Zep, or any 80's hair metal bands has been done a thousand times over already. Let's not copy what's taken place in another city or in a movie just for the sake of established cool. Take what you've heard any other closer do and just throw it out the window.
Let's brew up our own batch of cool, like you would a homemade tub of beer. Think of something fresh and new.

If Brett's willing to change his uniform number to 0, he could go with the Fixx's "Saved by Zero." OK, maybe not intimidating enough, or contemporary enough. If the Phils are willing to put up with, or censor out, a few profanities, you can't go wrong with Stabbing Westward's "Save Yourself." If that doesn't get Brett and the fans going, nothing will. OK, upon further review, maybe this doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement for your closer:
"I cannot save you/I can't even save myself!"

Brett Myers should use the intro/theme music that former WWE wrestler Brett "The Hitman" Hart used when he was still wrestling. It's upbeat, energizing, lots of metal guitar.... perfect for Myers personality and for a Closer in general.
It may even tag him with the nickname "THE HITMAN"!!!
..... ok let's not get too far ahead of ourselves I guess.

He should use "Warning" the 9th song off of the new nine inch nails album year zero. It should be started at about the 2:30 mark in the song when there are two different guitair riffs that sound simply amazing and Trent Reznor sings "You're time is tick tick ticking away. That line is repeated and the computer generated guitair riffs are electrifying.

Something like BEAST AND THE HARLOT by AVENGED SEVENFOLD would be perfect intro music for a closer. It has the kind of out of control guitar licks and pounding tempo that's perfect for making the place go crazy.
MEIN TEIL by RAMMSTEIN also fits the industrial battering ram kind of mentality that Philly is associated with.
Put in my vote for SEVEN NATION ARMY as another choice.

I'm not as familiar with the Beastie Boys, but I like that too. I agree that we should try to avoid the hair/glam metal. It's been done. However, it doesn't mean we can't rock hard.

No. It has made Will Ferrell legendary. Brett Myer's pitching will make Brett Myers legendary.
This isn't intimidating or cool. In fact, this song isn't even that good, and Blue Oyster Cult probably would've been banished to the back of the jukebox if it hadn't been for that skit.

I thought "Eye of the Tiger" would be good...the Rocky/Philly connection, plus the competitive/kller instinct..go for the win atty-tood...
Also thought Thorogood is god (no pun intended) and especially liked "Bad to the Bone" altho' I see (from your Wikipedia link) lots of guys use that one already.....I guess I'm getting really (really) old....I probably recognized fewer than half of those songs on the list....
It oughta be something with a Philadelphia thing --theme, performer, sound, whatever...combined with a tough-guy approach...that is familiar enough to fans as well...
All that said, the "cheesy" intro to "Final Countdown" might have something going for it, too.....
Hell with the "intro songs," guys.....let's just keep giving them hell and winning!!!!

Icky Thump's a better song than Seven Nation Army, but not if we're trying to pick the best closer entrance music.
If you look at the structure of each song, 7 Nation Army wins. Listen to the guitar riffs and drum beats - 7NA wins.
I like Icky Thump, but it's not WAR music.

'Thunderstruck' by AC/DC was my first suggestion. But whoever said 'Closing Time' by Semi Sonic, that definitely takes the cake. I like it.
Also, how about Linkin Park's 'Papercut'?
Of course, the song's chorus was written to describe a batter's emotions while in the box against Myers:
"Its like I’m paranoid looking over my back.
It’s like a whirlwind inside of my head.
Its like I can't stop what I'm hearing within.
Its like the face inside is right beneath my skin."

"JOHN FOGERTY - Put Me In Coach"
What? The song is called "Centerfield." Not a closer's song. And the artist's name is John Fogarty.
Myers' theme" my first thought was Pat Travers' version of "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights." The song rocks, and I think it's a great way to bring in a "lights-out" closer. Then I read the lyrics...NOT a good choice for Brett, no how, no way.
So I think I'd go along with Saliva's "Ladies & Gentlemen," too.

I'm gonna disagree with Jon about which White Stripes song is better. The guitar and drums in IT would probably blow out the speakers at the Bank.

I would say that Myers should come out to Godsmacks "I Stand Alone"
This is a perfect song for him it has a build up and the lyrics tell us he isn't afraid of failing. Another good Selection would be Metallica's "Where I May Roam"
I wouldn't oppose these songs either.
Ozzy Osbourne's "I Don't Want to Stop"
Aerosmith's "For Those About to Rock" and "Big Gun"
Metallica's "I Disappear"
Method Man's "Judgement Day

I can easily think of 50 other Metallica songs that I would choose over "Hero of the Day". Whoever suggested it and agreed with that post is probably loving that Howard Eskin set list posted at 3:04pm.

For Whom the Bell Tolls with the ringing Liberty Bell would be pretty cool. If not Brett, another Phillie needs to do that.

My name is "Luka". A song about domestic abuse (well, child abuse anyway). Not exactly a toe tapper, but fitting none the least.

just don't get Aerosmith unless you are tryint go appeal to the over 50 female crowd. the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica and Social D. choices could cover multiple generations, but if you are looking for the 20's and 30's crowds, go with some Rage Against the Machine or System of a Down (Sugar, or B.Y.O.B.).
the most imnportant thing is you want a song people know, but don't be too cliche. Think obscure, but popular like some good punk tunes (Pinhead by Ramones, The Clash, Pennywise, Black Flag, etc.). The Beastie Boys would be sweet too. What you Want or No Sleep Til Brooklyn really open well and would have the crowd going.

I am going to have to go with a WWE theme, either HHH, Kane, Undertaker or Edge. I know that would get Brett pumped up especially if he could have pyro as part of his entrance.

Anyone who said Muse gets my nod of approval. They're a band not many people know about but will soon enough. Personally I'd go with "New Born" ... piano intro leading to absolute rocking out...

For the who questioned Nickelback's "Never again" you don't know the song which is about spousal abuse.
Lyrics include:
You're just a child with a temper
Haven't you heard "Don't hit a lady"?
Kickin' your ass would be a pleasure

With the way our bullpen operates, maybe they should play when all bullpen pitchers enter the field "Take A Chance On Me" by ABBA.

Guns N Roses - WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
Rage Against the Machine - BULLS ON PARADE
Beastie Boys - SABATOGE
Linkin Park - ONE STEP CLOSER
It's gotta be something hard-hitting to really get his (and the fans) adrenaline going. Beatles, Springsteen, etc... just won't do that, good songs or not.

BBrett Myers dont need no sticking theme song, he sucks! His theme song should be Milli Vanilli's BLAME IT ON THE RAIN! because he never takes responsibility for his piece of garbage performances!
