Myers Shakes His Booty, Strikes Out Side

myers%20mound.jpgBrett Myers needs your help.

You see, Mariano Rivera and Billy Wagner enter games to Metallica's "Enter Sandman." Trevor Hoffman enters to AC/DC's "Hells Bells." Eric Gagne enters to Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle." Milwaukee's Francisco Cordero enters to Salvia's "Click, Click Boom."

Even Charlie Sheen's character Rick Vaughn in Major League entered to The Troggs' "Wild Thing."

Closers love their intro music.

Fans love it, too.

Myers has used both White Zombie's "Children of the Grave" and The Outlaws' "(Ghost) Rider in the Sky" as his intro music this season. But neither has really stuck and Myers has thought about what else he could use. That situation came to a head during last night's 6-4 victory over the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park, where neither White Zombie or The Outlaws were played before he struck out the side to earn his eighth save.

kc.jpgNo, Myers got KC & the Sunshine Band's "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" instead.

"It (ticked) me off," Myers said.

"They need to do a poll in the paper to tell people to pick my dang song," he added.

So what are you waiting for?

What should the Phillies play for Myers as he leaves the bullpen?

And assume that the entire KC & the Sunshine Band catalog has been chucked out the window.

*

I tried telling Myers the other day that he needs to pick a song that people know, so they can get into it. That means nothing obscure. So here are three songs to get the ball rolling: Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle," George Thorogood & The Destroyers' "Who Do You Love?," and Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower."

*

There seemed to be a little more buzz in the clubhouse last night. I think that's becaue Kyle Lohse pitched well -- four runs in 6 1/3 innings isn't a quality start, but he never seemed to be in real serious trouble -- and Antonio Alfonseca, Tom Gordon and Myers pitched very well in relief.

The Phillies have a 3.39 ERA in their last 21 games (14-7). In the last 18 games in which they have pitched, Phillies relievers have a 2.18 ERA.

*

Don't look now, but the Phillies moved into second place in the NL wild card standings. They're just one game behind the San Diego Padres.

*

Jim Salisbury considers Barry Bonds' record tainted. Ryan Howard does not. Phil Sheridan says people shouldn't be foolish enough to think the steroid era has ended. Would you want to be Mike Bacsik, and be part of the highlight reel forever?

*

We Should Be GM's lets us know that former Phillies pitcher Jay Baller got arrested ... for guns and cocaine.

*

Finger Food brings this to our attention: PETA loves the food at Citizens Bank Park. In fact, it's the best. They're not talking about the roast pork at Tony Luke's, either. They're talking about the fake steak at Rick's Steaks.

I agree with Finger Food. If I want to avoid meat, I avoid meat. I don't go for a fake cheesesteak, cheeseburger or whatever. Of course, being from Wisconsin, I think I'd dishonor my family if I swore off meats encased in pig intestines. I mean, can you imagine?

*

If you wonder why Scott Stapp is famous -- in my opinion, Creed ranks up there with Nickelback as The Worst Band Ever -- you will enjoy this discussion at Randball.

todd - want an effective intro for myers? how
'bout a seldom heard song that was actually derived from the trumpets and fanfare used to introduce matadors? for over who-knows how many centuries.

check out a 60's recording by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass - "The Lonely Bull" - Herb Alpert (the "A" of A&M Records) even mixed in crowd noises with the trumpets.

might work.

Andrew:

Todd - you won me over for life by replicating my own never-ending debate over the worst band ever. As far as Brett's intro music is concerned, I've always wished someone would use "Don't Fear the Reaper" by the Blue Oyster Cult. It's not quite as anthemic as a lot of closer songs but that guitar riff is one of the best ever.

John Slocum:

I like the Rolling Stones Sympathy for the Devil keyed up to "Please allow me to introduce myself" and some lyrics which are pretty powerful OR Social Distortions version of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire or some kind of theme music like James Bond's theme or the Peter Gunn theme by the Blues Brothers

I think that we need to go with something that is considered local and has some irony like:
Bruce Springstein's Santa Claus is coming to town

1. It is local and many people are familiar with it.
2. It has the whole Santa Claus connection which Philly fans are infamous for - it takes a bad incident and turns it around as an in your face to other teams.
3. It is totally unique
4. It's Bruce!
5. Look at the words, it is pretty intimidating:
You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

How 'bout ... "Bad to the Bone"...?

Joe:

More Human Than a Human - Nine Inch Nails

Josh:

For the 80s cheese factor you could always go with Europe's "The Final Countdown"

For a local angle, you've got "Boom! Shake the Room" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.

My best reference source is "Greatest Sports Rock And Jams" from my CD Collection. From that I must choose "The Power" by Snap.

If Brett decides to choose any of these, I ask only a small finders fee...Maybe a bullpen tour :-)

----
This wasn't brought up, but if Chase Utley is in the market for a new song, my wife an I have always thought he should use Volcano by Jimmy Buffet. In the middle of the song, he calls out to Mr. Utley (his keyboard player). It always makes me think of Chase.

LB:

We need something by Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. Something mean and fierce. They may not be as well known as other songs but how about "Screaming for Vengeance" or "The Trooper"?

Anonymous:

Freak on a Leash - Korn
The Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy

TJ:

Wanna know what would send chills up everybody's spine?

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

Yes, it's a couple years old, but it's a catchy tune still fresh in everybody's mind, and it's just metal enough for J. Priest and Maiden fans to appreciate.

Think about it -- the low boom of Jack White's guitar with the bass-like octave effect; the marching drum beat; and, of course, the explosion of sound when he rips into the meat of the song with that dirty-sounding riff.

I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back...

Brian:

+1 for Seven Nation Army. It's one of those songs that everyone in the crowd could stomp their feet to.

Love the blog Todd, and I couldn't agree with you more on Nickelback and Creed being the WORST bands of all time. I currently give the edge to Nickelback. Their 15 minutes of fame has laster waaaaaaaaayyyy too long.

GE:

For reference, here's a list of music used by other hitters/pitchers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_baseball_entrance_music

TJ:

Maybe somebody could find a Queens of the Stone Age song that rocks pretty hard - I would nominate "Sick, Sick, Sick" but that lacks the proper build-up that entrance music requires. It kind of just starts.

That, and I don't think that has as much widespread recognition. So scratch that.

Heh - how about this as a comedy option: Nine Inch Nails - "Closer"

jimmymack:

Oldies but goodies, high energy division

"Can't Touch This" by Hammer
"Sympathy for the Devil" (another vote)
"Let's go crazy" - Prince
"Gimme Shelter' -Stones
"Time Has Come Today" - The Chambers Brothers (long version has great instrumental mix, and ticking clock is great for a releiver)

Ross Blumenthal:

Van Halen's "Runnin With The Devil". The Perfect intro.

TJ:

Here's one that's not well known, but is up-and-coming. Muse is probably the hottest band in the UK right now.

First, check out the video for the song here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrsMPpW6q2E

(Yes, that's the same actor that plays Joe Chill in the last Batman movie..)

And of course the best part of the lyrics here make this a fist-pumping anthem:

No one's gonna take me alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive

mike:

some good one mentioned so far- i think i like "sympathy for the devil" most of those suggested.

but you really need something that will make people aggressive and angry (well, more aggressive and angry than usual). probably need to go '80s heavy metal for that. i'm not a fan, but there is motley crue's "wild side" which has a good intro. i know brett's from jacksonville and one of the coasts down in florida is called "the paradise coast" so guns n roses "paradise city" is a possibility. as a nod to the hometown, if jax is on the paradise coast that is.

my choice would be old-school metallica's "master of puppets" though. it's got a very heavy and long instrumental opening and the chorus fits the closer role perfectly: "obey your master!", and "master of puppets- i'm pulling your string", and so on and so forth.

there are tons of choices- but "shake your booty" is definitely not one of them. that guy or gal should be fired immediately.

tc:

MORE COWBELL!!

John in LA:

Amazing how many responses the call for songs gets...

Victorino's comments re: whether or not Bonds used steroids are moronic. Stick to what you know, Shane - Spam and Don Ho. I'm reaching here, but he probably also doesn't believe all that "nonsense" about Global Warming. Or cigarettes being bad for you. Or gravity. "Issac Newton - I hate him! I hate him!" You might want to slip a copy of "Game of Shadows' into his locker, Todd.

And as to pitchers giving up historic homers - somebody that regularly talks OPS and WHIP might, but the average fan doesn't. At all. Who gave up Bonds 73rd? Ruth's 60th? Maris' 61st?

That was a test. If you answered any of those corectly, I suggest you immediately drop what you're doing and go kiss a girl. Or boy.

Deb:

A closers song should be familar and intimidating. Upbeat is good but not required (Hells Bells, the beginning, is actually slow). But it should also reflect Myers taste..so it would be helpful to know what kind of music he favors. After all, he has to like coming out to it.

I like the idea of "Don't Fear the Reaper". Imagine hearing that rift start and he comes jogging out.

I also like the song Bodies by Drowning Pool. Papelbon used it when he first started but no more, so no duplication. It is good for the lyrics "let the bodies hit the floor", upbeat, and somewhat familar.

I agree with the person that said "Sympathy for the Devil" but only if it was cued exactly to the spot where it says "Please allow me to introduce myself".

How about Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi? Kind of local. If you use the long version, the first lines are perfect, straight from the movie Young Guns:
Jack Palance: "You are not a God"

Emilo Estivez: "Why don't you pull the trigger and find out?"

Then the nice slow music, good for taking the mound. Has a nice gunslinger motif too, which fits a closer.

phila fan in dc:

I don't know- the way Myers preformed last night, I think I'd like to (tick) him off as he goes out to pitch.

Danny:

Drowning Pool- BODIES

Place would go nuts

Steve:

Not the typical song, but I think Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody would be cool. Obviously well known, but also if it starts a few minutes into the song (3:00 minutes in is a good spot), the part building up to "so you think you can stomp me and spit in my eye?" through to an ending of "Just gotta get out, Just gotta get right outta here" would be pretty exciting

can never go wrong with metallica and guns n roses too.

Deb:

Another good Bon Jovi song would be "Raise Your Hands". The opening is very fast, guitar heavy. And the lyrics are great, especially the first few:

"Raise Your Hands"

You - you got a nasty reputation
We're in a sticky situation - it's down to me and you
So tell me - is it true ... they say there ain't nobody better
Well now that we're together
Show me what you can do

You're under the gun
Out on the run
Gonna set the night on fire
You're out on the run
Under the gun
And playin' to win

[Chorus:]
Raise your hands
When you want to let it go
Raise your hands
And you want to let a feeling show
Raise your hands
From New York to Chicago
Raise your hands
From New Jersey to Tokyo
Raise your hands

TJ:

oh my god, please please stop with the Bon Jovi

Ed S.:

"Humanoid" from Chevelle

or

"The Game" from Motorhead

either way it has to be a hard rock song or it won't work.

Tony Flaim:

Iron Man by Black Sabbath

V:

I'm a big fan of AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck,' with the sweeping intro. It encourages fan participation too.

Patrick:

Myers is from Jacksonville, home of many a redneck icon (.38 Special, members of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Limp Bizkit), and I think Flirtin' with Disaster by Molly Hatchet would be perfect on multiple levels (which is why he'd never use it). I've got nothing good to say about Limp Bizkit and don't really know their catalog, but there's probably something appropriately aggro in there.

Tim B.:

Thunderstruck is a good call.

I'm also all about any intense Pearl Jam song such as Go, Animal, Whipping, Do the Evolution, Life Wasted...the list goes on...

ACDC:

ACDC's Back in Black. That intro is very Philadelphia.

Todd- i do believe you've struck a nerve with this question about Myers' intro music... good one!

But my vote definitely goes with Brian and TJ for the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army. I don't understand how anybody could listen to that song and not want to kick some serious ass afterward! Plus, I have personal experience to vouch for it's intensity... we used it in college as an on-field warm up tune and it never failed to fire us up.

"and a message coming from my eyes says leave it alone..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j7huh5Egew

Paul:

I think being the KISStard that I am. The opening of both 'Love Gun' and 'Psycho Circus' would be awesome. Love Gun with the machine gun intro and Psycho Circus with the opening verse. I like the idea of 'Running With the Devil' I think Hells Bells is taken, but that would be a good choice, or even Firestarter by Prodigy. I've got a million ideas.

Deb:

So Todd, you gonna print off these comments and show them to Myers?

And to the folks who suggested Thunderstruck, that is out because it appears to be Cole Hamels music. Plus some other major leagues use it, including Smoltz with ATL. I maintain, that for a song to be effective it should be unique, meaning no one else is using it.

Oh, and I will NEVER stop with the Bon Jovi. :)

eli:

yo! how about a song from a real philly artist for a philly player?

anything by the roots or clap your hands say yeah should rock the house and do the city proud.

and it would be unique to brett myers.

any closer can pick a guns n roses, acdc, or metallica song... talk about predictable.

Gregory DeFelice:

Thorogood---Bad to the Bone

Aerosmith-Dream On

"New Noise" by Refused!

I would recomment the song Radar Love the cover version done by White Lion...It's got amazing riff and a fast paced song...
Also, the song portrays the current trend of pitchers' affinity toward the speed gun....
If Breet chooses my song, I would like him to get us two tickets for my wife and I for a Phillies game and also a tour of the clubhouse....
Thanks,

Seven Nation Army is a great suggestion, as is Sympathy for the Devil.

despite the title, i think Prison Sex" by Tool would be a good one.

but my favorite intro music ever was when Burrell was using Dio's "Holy Diver." awesome.

John:

seven nation army would be badass. don't look past the ace of spades from motorhead.

Todd:

"Thunderstruck" by ACDC or "Sleep now in the fire" by Rage Against the Machine....both have great beginnings for a build up when he runs out and when it kicks in it will get the crowd going

AJ:

He should have Linkin Park "In the End" play when he comes in.

ryan:

I second the vote for either AC/ DC's "Thunderstruck" or Disturbed's "Down with the Sickness"

Scott:

I like the Public Enemy idea but I would prefer "Shut 'em down" over "Welcome to the Terrordome"

"Hear go the sound of the wreckin' ball
Boom and Pound

Jonny S:

The White Stripes new song Icky Thump would be perfect.

Thunderstruck is perfect for Myers' intro music!

John:

"Do The Evolution" By Pearl Jam

"Unchained" By Van Halen

"Seek And Destroy" By Metallica

"The Ecstasy Of Gold" By Enricco Morricone from the soundtrack of "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"

"Kickstart My Heart"
"(You've Got) Another Thing Comin'"

I guess I'm partial to 80s metal.

Rob:

Ozzy Ozbourne- "Crazy Train" It's a great song and Brett is a Crazy Train of a pitcher.

TJ:

That Rage Against The Machine suggestion is a solid one, too. There's not many RATM songs that don't leave me seething by the time I'm done listening.

jonathan:

"Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix

It has no real significance to Myers (that I know of), but the intro is heavy and recognizable.

I also like "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Stones and "New Noise" by Refused, but I think Refused is too obscure, unfortunately.

Eye of the Tiger would be a GREAT, GREAT choice.

I came here to suggest "You Could Be Mine." By GnR. The song from Terminator 2. GREAT intro. But I also like the suggestion of "Seven Nation Army." Now I know this will get no love, but "Tweezer (Reprise)" by Phish would be awesome. If anyone out there knows the song, they know what I mean. Lastly, some shameless humor: anytime anyone comes out of the bullpen, to prepare us for the end results, perhaps it should be "Rape Me" by Nirvana.

Liz:

Mama Said Knock You Out.

Gabe:

I love the idea of "So What'cha Want" but I also think the intro to "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys would rock the joint.

Gram:

The Public Image, by Public Image Limited could work nicely....

Chris:

The ROCKY theme or Eye of the Tiger, both give chills and are upbeat!

"Thunderstruck" doesn't sound too bad to me.

Bernie:

Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner. Rock is so overused. This would be original, and be totally intimidating to the other team.

TJ:

Seconding the Beastie Boys love as well.

Anything from the Rocky soundtrack is kind of played out and not unique to Brett's situation. All the Philadelphia teams use the Rocky theme and Eye of the Tiger.

Anything by U2, Led Zep, or any 80's hair metal bands has been done a thousand times over already. Let's not copy what's taken place in another city or in a movie just for the sake of established cool. Take what you've heard any other closer do and just throw it out the window.

Let's brew up our own batch of cool, like you would a homemade tub of beer. Think of something fresh and new.

Other songs I'll throw out there:
Rage Against the Maching "Bulls on Parade"
Metallica "Hero of the Day"

JC:

If Brett's willing to change his uniform number to 0, he could go with the Fixx's "Saved by Zero." OK, maybe not intimidating enough, or contemporary enough. If the Phils are willing to put up with, or censor out, a few profanities, you can't go wrong with Stabbing Westward's "Save Yourself." If that doesn't get Brett and the fans going, nothing will. OK, upon further review, maybe this doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement for your closer:

"I cannot save you/I can't even save myself!"

Second choice would be a Througood song, but not Who Do YOu Love. I'd pick the one that says "Move it on over- move over nice dog, the mean old dog is movin in".

Dwyer:

Should be something Ac/Dc either thunderstruck or For Those about to Rock. After they played For those about to rock during the opening night of the Linc the crowd went absolutly bezerk!!

Anonymous:

Walk is a great song, but probably not for a pitcher. for a pantera song, "A New Level" might work.

Bruce :

Some instant adrenaline shots:

"Kickstart My Heart"- Motley Crue

"Bang your head (Metal Health)" - Quiet Riot

"Heartbreaker" or "Immigrant Song" - Led Zep

Bill:

How about "Unchained" by Van Halen. Even the start of the song rocks so you don't have to wait through some lame intro.

Joe:

GO WITH AC/DC's "HELLS BELLS"....

I THINK IT FITS THE WHOLE "LIBERTY BELL" THEME AT CITIZANS BANK PARK. MAYBE THEY COULD EVEN LIGHT UP THE LIBERTY BELL JUST LIKE DO FOR HOME RUNS WHILE IT'S PLAYING TOO.

Tartan69:

The opening to Tool's Aenima: "Some say the end is near..."

Jayman:

Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
7 Nation Army - The White Stripes
Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix
Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones

Jeff:

Brett Myers should use the intro/theme music that former WWE wrestler Brett "The Hitman" Hart used when he was still wrestling. It's upbeat, energizing, lots of metal guitar.... perfect for Myers personality and for a Closer in general.

It may even tag him with the nickname "THE HITMAN"!!!

..... ok let's not get too far ahead of ourselves I guess.

Big Mike:

Please - 80's Metallica - Seek & Destroy, Creeping Death, For Whom The Bell Tolls or Master of Puppets (Dyers Eve would be the best, but may be a bit too hard for some)
Anybody who goes to Eagles games is tired of AC/DC, so please no Thunderstruck.

hoyalawya:

"Right Now" by Van Halen is the perfect closer song -- a sweeping intro and lyrics appropriate for end-of-game situations.

david:

another vote for: SEVEN NATION ARMY -- as Jules would say, that's some cold-blooded sh!t.

Hegdoooos:

Hell's Bells would fit nicely in Citizen's Bank Park... but I'll vote for Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People"...

Anonymous:

I'd suggest "The Thing That Should Not Be" by Metallica, or better yet, Primus's cover of it, which is actually harder and better than the original. another Metallica candidate is "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Nice:

THE INTRO TO AC/DC's "HELLS BELLS" IS PERFECT FOR MYERS AND PHILLY!!!!

Juan Valdez:

"The End" by The Doors. I HATE The Doors, but that song at the end of Apocalypse now was PERFECT. They could show the finale to the movie on the Jumbotron as it plays and Myers enters.

Chris:

Thunderstruck - AC/DC

Rage Against The Machine - Sleep Now In The Fire or Renegades of Funk

Anonymous:

please god, no Thunderstruck (insanely overplayed), or Hells Bells (already taken).

Hoffman already uses Hells Bells...can you get lamer than copying another closer's music?

vince:

I agree.....I like "HELLS BELLS" by AC/DC.

Anonymous:

Hoffman is on his way out. It's time to make room for Myers. I say "Hells Bells" too....

Charles:

Under Pressure by Marilyn Manson

Dooo iiiiittttt:

Superman by the Kinks or REM

Jim Crew:

The Who - Baba O'Reilly

Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns & Money

Dennis:

Another vote for "Let the Bodies hit the Floor" by Drowning Pool.

One of the greatest video's for this song: http://shizzville.com/let-bodies-hit-floor

CW:

When picking a song it might be good to remember that this has to go over a loud speaker in a stadium where there are families (i.e. RATM and Kid Rock songs would have to be carefully chosen or edited not to offend).

That said, I put my vote for One by One by the Foo Fighters

"Done, done, on to the next one"

Anonymous:

I'll also vote for Motorhead's Ace of Spades.

franky c:

HELLS BELLS

Jim:

Wagner would be fantastic, especially if they took the version from Apocalypse Now and left Robert Duvall's dialogue and the helicopter sound effects in...

Those who suggested "You Could Be Mine" have apparently forgotten the part about "your bitch-slap rappin'". Probably not how Myers wants to be representing himself...

JayF:

I suggested "Under My Thumb" and it was credited to someone else. Don't make me call my copyright attorney.
As for the chump who hates The Doors . . . go out and buy some musical taste.

Dan:

A few thoughts:
-O Fortuna
-Cochise by Audioslave
-Iron Man by Black Sabbath (OK, not too original, but whatever)
-Panic Attack by Dream Theater
-My Hero by Foo Fighters
-Turn the Page, the Metallica Cover
-Bulls on Parade Rage Against the Machine
-Du Hast by Rammstein
-X.Y.U. by Smashing Pumpkins
-Parabola by Tool

I've generally been thinking of the beginning of each song.

Heavy F'n Metal:

Metallica's Creeping Death is perfect - hard, heavy, fast... and nice message to the opposing team before they get shut down.

No Thunderstruck!! Overplayed and is already used in Eagles games all the time.

Anonymous:

Seven Nation Army

Dave DeAndrea:

He should use "Warning" the 9th song off of the new nine inch nails album year zero. It should be started at about the 2:30 mark in the song when there are two different guitair riffs that sound simply amazing and Trent Reznor sings "You're time is tick tick ticking away. That line is repeated and the computer generated guitair riffs are electrifying.

Anonymous:

I'd have to agree thsat there aren't many songs more intimidating than the intro to HELLS BELLS by AC/DC. No lyrics....Just the music is enough to get everyone pumped up.

My vote: HELLS BELLS

rodger:

He should come out to the theme music from the Halloween movies....that music they play when Michael Myers is about to cause havoc on some poor victim....they could give out Mike Myers mask at the park and the fans could wear them when Bret's closing a game

Boy Gorge:

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" would be marvy.

Big Mike:

Ride of the Valkries is actually a great idea with Robert Duvall speaking over the music
"You smell that?"
"Nothing else in the world smells like that"
"Smells like,.... victory"
(not sure if you really want to add the napalm reference)

Dave:

For Whom The Bell Tolls!!! Great entrance song.

Anonymous:

quiet riot is always a crowd pleaser

Kristen:

Brett's gonna go for THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!!

It's perfect!!!

Joe:

Any of the Rocky themes.
Seven Nation Army
Sympathy for the Devil

Was thinking about Born to Run, but you can't give that to anyone other than Bourn.

Maybe Philadelphia Freedom

And to whoever suggested Wild Thing... that brings back bad memories of Joe Carter '93

Anonymous:

shame there aren't any heavy metal lovers adding recommendations...

Greg Bringhurst:

Something like BEAST AND THE HARLOT by AVENGED SEVENFOLD would be perfect intro music for a closer. It has the kind of out of control guitar licks and pounding tempo that's perfect for making the place go crazy.

MEIN TEIL by RAMMSTEIN also fits the industrial battering ram kind of mentality that Philly is associated with.

Put in my vote for SEVEN NATION ARMY as another choice.

Rich Balasa :

The perfect selection would be that Incubus song - Goodbye- nice to know you!!

Anonymous:

1) Ace of Spades - Motorhead!

2) Highway to Hell - AC/DC

3) Michael Myers Theme - Halloween

Mary Sue:

"Jump Around" by House of Pain...it's old but it would be an awesome closer song

Lewis O'Neil:

The Boys Are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy

Kristen:

Brett has to go with THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!!

It's perfect!

Neil Roosevelt:

SEVEN NATION ARMY by THE WHITE STRIPES

AIN'T TALKIN ABOUT LOVE BY VAN HALEN

UNCHAINED BY VAN HALEN

Greg Bringhurst:

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN is good to. Especially for any fans or arrested development.

Mike Z.:

How about Suzanne Vega's, "Luka"?

A song about a battered woman fits Myers perfect.

Doug P.:

Pick #1: "Knights of Cydonia"--Muse
Pick #2: "Seven Nation Army"--The White Stripes
Pick #3: "Elevation"--U2
Pick #4: "War Pig"--Ozzy Osbourne
Pick #5: "Baba O'Reily"--The WHO

I'm not as familiar with the Beastie Boys, but I like that too. I agree that we should try to avoid the hair/glam metal. It's been done. However, it doesn't mean we can't rock hard.

Bros before Hos:

How about the Prodigy song "Smack My Bitch Up".

Jon T. Shirts:

I say "Lola" by the Kinks.

nick schell:

Lose yourself - Eminem

Ewen:

Gotta go with Seven Nation Army. Bad effing ass.

Jon T. Shirts:

"Lola" by the Kinks.

#1) "Knights of Cydonia"--Muse
#2) "Seven Nation Army"--White Stripes
#3) "Elevation"--U2
#4) "War Pig"--Ozzy Osbourne
#5) "Baba O'Reily"--The WHO

I think we're good for going original rather than routine. Hair/Glam Metal has been done. Nothing says we can't be more innovative, and still rock hard!

Bill:

Eithet the T. Rex or Power Station version of Get It On or Power Station's Some Like It Hot

Andrew:

Ride The Lightning - Metallica

Ride The Lightning - Metallica

Skip!:

the perfect song has to be "Hero of the Day" by Metallica. Starts off slow, but in a chilling/pumped up kind of way, then by the end of the song (when Brett should be near ready) the song is rocking out and amped up.

Anonymous:

Bleed It Out - Linkin Park

"Won't get Fooled Again" the Who.

PhillysMostWanted:

How about firestarter by prodigy?

Rob R.:

Bawdidiba - Kid Rock

Rob R.:

Bawdidiba - Kid Rock

Jocks:

THUNDERSTRUCK by AC/DC is perfect. Not sure why no one uses this.

BREAK STUFF by Limp Bizkit also gets the blood pumping. Also hear that Brett's a huge fan of this one!!

"I pack a chainsaw
I'll skin your @$$ raw
And if my day keeps going this way
I just might break your f*$*** face tonight"

Justin:

It's so simple

THUNDERSTRUCK by AC/DC

Spinal Tap:

Rey Mysterio:

"Big Balls" by AC/DC

My top 3 or 4 for Myers:

Either "Ride the Lightning" or
"Master of Puppets" by Metallica.

"Metal Health" by Quiet Riot

"The Trooper" by Iron Maiden

"Working Man" by Rush

Anonymous:

master of puppets by metallica.

noah:

"i know its over" by the smiths. a slooow downer of a song but appropriate.
"here comes your man" by the pixies. not intimidating but maybe myers should stay away from intimidating stuff.
i liket he smack my bitch up and t-rex suggestions. with any song it needs to one that is his and no one else's.

John Trotman:

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper

Garanteed that cowbell sale will skyrocket in the area if he picks this song and the crowd would be banging the cowbells in the stands like maniacs every time he pitches - a la Will Ferrell on Saturday Night live:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt8bJdmUlSo

This would make Myers legendary.

Cuso:

How about "For whom the Bells Toll" Metallica

Tartan69:

Agreed with "Hero of the Day" by Metallica, as long as the guy who suggested it doesn't post it a fourth time.

And to you IDIOTS who keep suggesting Thunderstruck (way way way way overplayed!) and Hell's Bells (uh, it's already taken by the Padres HOF closer), I have two words for you:

PLEASE STOP

Mark:

why so many oldies. theyre so OLD!

ten thousand fists - disturbed

everyone can pump they're fists when he comes out. case closed.

John:

"do the evolution" by pearl jam I also like the idea of "hero of the day" by Metallica

Conigliaro:

I agree with the Stones' "Under My Thumb". Another good one - Social Distortion's "Don't Drag Me Down".

Anonymous:

I'm gonna have to jump on the Seven Nation Army bandwagon too. I can't believe no other closer has claimed it yet. However, i do like the one poster's suggestion about giving Brett the "Hitman" handle in homage to the former wrestling champ.

TJ:

"

No. It has made Will Ferrell legendary. Brett Myer's pitching will make Brett Myers legendary.

This isn't intimidating or cool. In fact, this song isn't even that good, and Blue Oyster Cult probably would've been banished to the back of the jukebox if it hadn't been for that skit.

procrastinating_at_work:

Im with some of the others on this, 7 Nation Army by the white stripes is defintely the way to go. It has the perfect lyrics and a huge rock and roll sound that would sound awesome on the speakers at citizens bank ballpark. I am just sad that I got to this blog too late to be the first to suggest it.

Phils45:

Nickelback's "Never Again

TJ:

holy crap, I really apologize for the quadruple post

Jim Phelan:

I love the Hell's Bell's but thats Trevor Hoffman...If you want to rock the crowd go with RUSH-Workingman...or Anthem

HOWARD ESKIN'S TOP 10 - INTROS THEMES FOR BRETT MYERS

5. It's Raining Men, by The Weather Girls
6. In The Navy, by Village People
7. Dancing Queen, by Abba
8. Let's Get Physical, by Olivia Newton John
9. I Will Survive, by Gloria Gaynor
10. Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, by Wham

My list is "hot"

RickyM:

A great energy song by a local Philly band, but also world famous the Roots, "Here I Come" on their recent "GAME THEORY" album. Perfect song for a closer!

chris:

Rush: Working Man

Mushroomhead: Crazy

Faith No More: Epic

Slipknot: Duality

jeffH:

"New Noise" by Refused - Great choice! But all of the Thunderhead ACDC fans probably won't know it lol

The beginning of Firestarter is a solid choice, too.

Here's one that hasn't been suggested yet: I'm Your Boogie Man by White Zombie. Take a band Myers likes doing a cover of a KC & The Sunshine Band - pump him up and piss him off!

Tim:

BODIES by Drowning Pool gets my vote!!

Rob:

Saliva ------Ladies and Gentlemen

Rich:

I think Brett should enter to the Coverdale Page song Over Now

joey b:

Last Resort- Papa Roach

FasterEddie:

I thought "Eye of the Tiger" would be good...the Rocky/Philly connection, plus the competitive/kller instinct..go for the win atty-tood...

Also thought Thorogood is god (no pun intended) and especially liked "Bad to the Bone" altho' I see (from your Wikipedia link) lots of guys use that one already.....I guess I'm getting really (really) old....I probably recognized fewer than half of those songs on the list....

It oughta be something with a Philadelphia thing --theme, performer, sound, whatever...combined with a tough-guy approach...that is familiar enough to fans as well...

All that said, the "cheesy" intro to "Final Countdown" might have something going for it, too.....

Hell with the "intro songs," guys.....let's just keep giving them hell and winning!!!!

Chris :

He should walk out to "Hells Bells"

Bob:

"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC

damn! that WOULDA been a crappy pun...I meant to say he (George Thorogood) is "good"....not "god"

I don't think I thought anybody was a "god" in a long stinkin time!

Bill:

Papa Roach

Getting away with Murder

How about the song that goes...

Oh... No... There goes Tokyo... Godzilla!

Rick:

Savoy Truffle by the Beatles

del the funky homosapien:

Hang Me Up To Dry - Cold War Kids

OR

sex pistols - anarchy in the UK

Jonez:

For Whom the Bell Tolls....Metallica
Raining Blood.....Slayer
Cowboys from Hell....Pantera
Rusty Cage.....Soundgarden

AF:

Metallica-Ride the lightning
Phish-Birds of a feather
Queen- I want it all

joey B:

The end of the 1812 overture would be awesome

mike gavin:

For Myers I think Guns N Roses "Welcome to The Jungle" would work. The intro guitar riff is made for an intro to a closer

Kevin:

Come in with Van Halen playing either "Right Now" or "Jump"

Ryan:

All in favor of "Smack my Bitch up." That should get him pumped!

Angela:

Maybe "Crazy Train" or a shout-out to the '93 Phils and using "Whomp There It Is."

Bill:

UNCHAINED! VH

Scott:

Suggestions for Myers' intro music:

1. Cake - "The Distance".
2. Jimi Hendrix - "Voodoo Child"

Greg Papazian:

I think Icky Thump is better than 7 Nation Army by the White Stripes IMO.

Charlie:

Instead of George Thorogood's Who do you love? I prefer Bad to the Bone.

mike:

Sympathy for the Devil, the Stones

Greg Papazian:

Icky Thump would be my choice over Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes.

Jon:

SLAYER-RAINING BLOOD. Best guitar Riff ever

TJ:

Icky Thump's a better song than Seven Nation Army, but not if we're trying to pick the best closer entrance music.

If you look at the structure of each song, 7 Nation Army wins. Listen to the guitar riffs and drum beats - 7NA wins.

I like Icky Thump, but it's not WAR music.

Alicia:

JOHN FOGERTY - Put Me In Coach

Anonymous:

'Thunderstruck' by AC/DC was my first suggestion. But whoever said 'Closing Time' by Semi Sonic, that definitely takes the cake. I like it.

Also, how about Linkin Park's 'Papercut'?
Of course, the song's chorus was written to describe a batter's emotions while in the box against Myers:

"Its like I’m paranoid looking over my back.
It’s like a whirlwind inside of my head.
Its like I can't stop what I'm hearing within.
Its like the face inside is right beneath my skin."

V:

Did anyone else notice that Howard Eskin posted his top 10 songs for Brett?

DL Hey Now:

Drowning Pool - Bodies

(Let the bodies hit the floor.....let the bodies hit the floor)

Brett's killin' 'em, so this song will let the other team know what's coming

(Let the bodies hit the floor.....let the bodies hit the floor).

T:

ESKIN is an AZZ!!!

Anonymous:

did anyone else notice its not really eskin?

and where do we find these people making beatles, linkin park, semi sonic, and nickelback suggestions?

Whatever:

I'm surprised Eskin took time from kissing Andy Reid's butt. But he does know baseball. After all, he said in May the Phils would be a below .500 non-contender and that Manuel would be fired. Idiot.

Paul:

The beginning of ten thousand fists by disturbed is perfect. It's heavy and very intimidating. Plus the phillies keep pushing this young theme, so why play AC/DC or Metallica?

Money for Nothing by Dire Straits, cued up to the opening guitar solo about a minute-thirty in

TJ:

hey how about Hank Williams Jr.

or some Boyz2Men, that'll really rev up the crowd + they're a local act

Anonymous:

"JOHN FOGERTY - Put Me In Coach"

What? The song is called "Centerfield." Not a closer's song. And the artist's name is John Fogarty.

Myers' theme" my first thought was Pat Travers' version of "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights." The song rocks, and I think it's a great way to bring in a "lights-out" closer. Then I read the lyrics...NOT a good choice for Brett, no how, no way.

So I think I'd go along with Saliva's "Ladies & Gentlemen," too.

Greg Papazian:

I'm gonna disagree with Jon about which White Stripes song is better. The guitar and drums in IT would probably blow out the speakers at the Bank.

HEISS:

"For whom the bell tolls" by Metallica...Ring the bell in the outfield...GAME OVER!

Greg:

He should enter to the Mike Meyers theme song from the Halloween movies.

bluestarinphilly:

how about Muse's "Hysteria". sick intro. that could get anyone's blood pumping and ready to clean house...

Greg:

He should enter to the Mike Meyers theme song from the Halloween movies.

bluestarinphilly:

how about Muse's "Hysteria". sick intro. that could get anyone's blood pumping and ready to clean house...

DWubb:

I would say that Myers should come out to Godsmacks "I Stand Alone"
This is a perfect song for him it has a build up and the lyrics tell us he isn't afraid of failing. Another good Selection would be Metallica's "Where I May Roam"

I wouldn't oppose these songs either.
Ozzy Osbourne's "I Don't Want to Stop"
Aerosmith's "For Those About to Rock" and "Big Gun"
Metallica's "I Disappear"
Method Man's "Judgement Day

Last Action Hero:

Megadeth: Angry Again

bluestarinphilly:

how about Muse's "Hysteria"? has a pretty sick blood-pumping intro...

Anonymous:

There is only one option and that is
LOSE YOUR SELF by EMINEM

Huh?:

I can easily think of 50 other Metallica songs that I would choose over "Hero of the Day". Whoever suggested it and agreed with that post is probably loving that Howard Eskin set list posted at 3:04pm.

Anonymous:

For Whom the Bell Tolls with the ringing Liberty Bell would be pretty cool. If not Brett, another Phillie needs to do that.

JKL:

How about Boom Boom Out Go the Lights by Pat Travers?

b-money:

Definitely something fierce sounding...

Seven Nation Army-White Stripes
Bulls on Parade-Rage Against the Machine
Du Hast-Rammstein
Wolfmother-Joker and the Theif

Joe:

Metallica- Seek and Destroy

Great title, lyrics, and opening riff

Ed:

Springsteen/ Glory Days
Springsteen/ No Surrender
Skynyrd/ Call Me the Breeze

Bob:

My name is "Luka". A song about domestic abuse (well, child abuse anyway). Not exactly a toe tapper, but fitting none the least.

Anonymous:

RAGDOLL by Aerosmith!!!!

ken:

Hendrix's Voodoo Chile

case closed.

Bill:

How bout "Nice to know you" by Incubus.
It would go nicely with all of his strikeouts too.

Mo:

just don't get Aerosmith unless you are tryint go appeal to the over 50 female crowd. the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica and Social D. choices could cover multiple generations, but if you are looking for the 20's and 30's crowds, go with some Rage Against the Machine or System of a Down (Sugar, or B.Y.O.B.).

the most imnportant thing is you want a song people know, but don't be too cliche. Think obscure, but popular like some good punk tunes (Pinhead by Ramones, The Clash, Pennywise, Black Flag, etc.). The Beastie Boys would be sweet too. What you Want or No Sleep Til Brooklyn really open well and would have the crowd going.

Jared:

I am going to have to go with a WWE theme, either HHH, Kane, Undertaker or Edge. I know that would get Brett pumped up especially if he could have pyro as part of his entrance.

FRO:

Garbage Man - G Love

Dan:

I think "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" by the Smashing Pumpkins would be great.

Clem Chickasaw:

I'm on board with "Time Has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers. Ramones also cover it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZdpAe0Yhk4&mode=related&search=

Anonymous:

Anyone who said Muse gets my nod of approval. They're a band not many people know about but will soon enough. Personally I'd go with "New Born" ... piano intro leading to absolute rocking out...

Chuck D:

Can't believe no one has suggested: "Shut It Down," by Public Enemy.

Anonymous:

For the who questioned Nickelback's "Never again" you don't know the song which is about spousal abuse.

Lyrics include:

You're just a child with a temper
Haven't you heard "Don't hit a lady"?
Kickin' your ass would be a pleasure

CHawk:

White Stripes - Seven Nation Army or Public Enemy - Welcome to the Terrordome

John Q:

How about "I'm a loser" by the Beatles?

JOHN Q:

How about "I'm a loser" by the Beatles?

John Q:

How about "I'm a loser" by the Beatles?

Larry:

With the way our bullpen operates, maybe they should play when all bullpen pitchers enter the field "Take A Chance On Me" by ABBA.

Becky:

Guns N Roses - WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Rage Against the Machine - BULLS ON PARADE

Beastie Boys - SABATOGE

Linkin Park - ONE STEP CLOSER

It's gotta be something hard-hitting to really get his (and the fans) adrenaline going. Beatles, Springsteen, etc... just won't do that, good songs or not.

Beaver:

BBrett Myers dont need no sticking theme song, he sucks! His theme song should be Milli Vanilli's BLAME IT ON THE RAIN! because he never takes responsibility for his piece of garbage performances!

Beanie:

How about the song "My Name is DNICE" by DNICE
