Adam Eaton will make three more starts this season, if the Phillies decide to keep him in the rotation:
- Sunday against the Mets at Shea Stadium.
- Sept. 21 against the Nationals at RFK Stadium.
- Sept. 27 against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park.
Sunday's start is a lock because Eaton historically has pitched well against the Mets. In fact, the Phillies had John Ennis pitch Saturday against the Marlins just so Eaton could face them. But the other two dates could change, depending on Cole Hamels' possible return to the rotation next week in St. Louis and how the Phillies line up their rotation with no game Sept. 24. (Charlie Manuel said last Friday he has the rotation set up through Sept. 23.)
But the point is: Eaton potentially could start three of the Phillies' remaining 18 games. Like I wrote following last night's 8-2 loss to the Rockies, three games can make a big difference in October baseball or an October fishing/hunting/golfing trip. The Phillies lost the wild card by one game in 2005. They lost the wild card by three games in 2006.
The Phillies are 2 1/2 games behind the Padres in the NL wild-card race, three games behind in the loss column.
Three starts, three games.
They're big.

How bad has Eaton been? He could be historically bad. Check out these numbers in Mike's Baseball Rants.
*
Bob Ford writes about how this team's pitching ultimately will cost the Phillies a trip to the postseason.
*
Today seems to be a pretty important day in improving the Phillies' postseason chances. Hamels throws a bullpen session before tonight's game, his first true test toward returning to the mound.

Relive last night's loss in pictures.

Party at the Tiki Bar anybody?

"I don't think I necessarily threw the ball that bad, but obviously the bulk of my mistakes ended up over the fence," Eaton said. "For the most part, I was happy with the way I threw the ball." Yeah right.
We suffer a GM that shackles us with this load for 2 more years at 8MM. We suffer a manager (that I usually defend) that keeps running this guy out there, loss after loss. 18 games left and the best we can do is 15-3 if Eaton stays in the rotation. Did any sane person really think he was going to pitch a decent game?
Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it...Phillies misson statement, 2007 edition. And 2004, 2005, 2006.
A fan invests time, money and emotion into a team and we get the above. We deserve better.

I would take the Ennis/Condrey combo over Eaton for the rest of the season (even including the Mets game). Our bats were silent last night, but Eaton was playing soft toss for the 5 innings he was out there. I think Charlie is getting orders from upstairs to play him, just like he did with Barajas.
This is all on Gillick.
Still, we all knew that this game would probably be a loss. Now it is time to win the next 2.
I am still on board with this team.

Ditto the 2 comments above.
I'm always amazed by the rationale - this guy hits well against the Cubs every 3rd Tuesday in July in even-ending years, so we're playing him even though he's hitting .150 and limps. Hell, bring on Eaton and the Mets. I guess some of these guys are so superstitious (or worse) that it's true. We'll see. Be nice if the bats woke up.
PS: How long before the Geico cavemen weigh in?

The Eaton issue I'm most worried about is his start against the Mets this weekend. (Particularly because I've got tickets for that game with a Mets fan.) Sure he's 5-0 with a 2.83 ERA versus the Metropolitans lifetime, but how long can he keep this up? I have a terrible feeling that the Mets are due to figure him out this time around.

I'm still on board, to the point I just sent my renewal money in for postseason tickets (ah, the dreams, the dreams). I may be as delusional as Eaton, but I'm gonna be a beleiver until the end. But I'll still be torqued if they run Eaton out there again. I'd suggest he just be restricted to playing long toss with Hamels, except I'm afraid he would hit him in the face and knock him out for the year.
Whoever Lisa is, that caveman comment was a winner.

Clare,
In fairness: when it's overcast (not partially cloudy, mind you) and mid-70s on every second Sunday in September in odd-ending years (unless it's a Leap Year, of course) - oh, and the second basemen's last name ends with a Y - Eaton is practically unhittable. I think you'll be fine. Tell your Mets friend to eat mud and enjoy the game!

It's too early to hear from REALMETFAN.
His mother hasn't opened the basement door yet to wake him up for lunch (PB&J, no crust).
But he better hope we win the WC. If not, the Mets get Peavy twice in a five game series.
Good luck with that.
The Rockies throw a righty tonight with a 19.06 ERA. Let's score some early runs for Kyle so he can go at least 6-7 innings.

Let's try to keep this message board as civil as humanly possible. It's fine if you're a Mets fan. Feel free to post. But if it's going to be childish name-calling like metsfans' last post (which I deleted) I'll just keep deleting.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Murph hasn't seen the light yet huh? My PB&J was delicious by the way and who in the world is scared of Jake Peavy, when the Padres do't even put up numbers like that. they are the Chicago Bears of baseball. Just take our OLD Mets motto and "Wait 'til nexy year". I know you wishing for the ultimate downfall to happen, but the Mets are serious this time and "WE WILL WIN THE SERIES" Tahnks for all the love MURPH. Signing off REALMETFAN.
P.S. YA'LL BETTER HOPE YOU WIN THE WC, BUT FOR WHAT, IT'S GOING TO BE ONE AND DONE ANYWAY.

Eaton's making,8 million per year. And our ace Kendrick ,is making the mininum. Who ever said life was fair? I would love to see someday, a high salaried flop, to be sent to Siberia, in minor leagues ,for duration of his contract. That would give me some satisfaction, that he'd be punished for his crime of impersonating a pitcher, and theft by deception.. I don't care, if he were to throw a shutout, against Mets, He doesn't deserve to get anymore chances.. Where's Arthur Rhodes these days? another one of Gillicks gang..I think we should put in a new segment, in the ZO ZONE.. "Gillicks Gang" Where are they now ? P-H-I-L-L-I-E-S , Phillies...

Pat H...
I'm with you. I'd like a WATN segment to follow clowns Gillick has brought in like Rhodes, Alex S. Gonzolez, Ryan Franklin, Barajas, Sal Fasano, etc. He really has a thing for tomato cans he knows from the AL. Wasn't Gillick supposed to be a good GM who built winners?

Here's an example of civil: no name-calling, just prediction-making. Like this one - Hey metsfan, see you in October.
I've said it before and I'll continue to say it.

I suspect Todd will do a big story on Mr. Gillick's hits and misses after the season.
In all fairness to Gillick (and I'm not a fan of his) he should get credit for some key parts of this team. Victorino, Werth, Dobbs, Kendrick, Losche, etc. and others that bloomed on his watch. My problem with him is he is great at the low level overachiever picks but he really has wiffed on the Eaton, Helms, Barajas, Garcia signings, didn't unload Leiber for anything, plus passed on Borowski and God knows who else. His mistakes crippled us this year in salary and will for another two years with Eaton/Helms/Barajas. Really expensive mistakes, bargin basement successes. Sound like anyone we already had? Hint: likes to sky dive.
But we soldier on, let's get 2 more from the Rockies and go spank the Mets.

Jimmy,
Victorino was here before Gillick, he just became a regular in the Gillick era.

Good catch.
I know, I gave Gillick marginal credit for players in the system but who got a shot on his watch. It's a reach but I'm trying to be fair. I was going to name Coste, but Gillick did everything in his power to keep him down, so he gets no credit for him, that one belongs to Uncle Charles.

I live in Italy and I'm a Philly Fan.
I watch game late in the night cause time zone, it's always an amusing show to watch our hitters, they keep me awake during the night BUT I can't no longer loose hours of sleep to watch Adam Eaton.
He's disgusting! He is not good as starter, he is not good for the bullpen, he is not good for baseball.
Now the real problem is not the 2007 WC, the real problem is not to waste also 2008 season because of "2 more years at 8MM"!!
Worst 2006/2007 mlb trade.
I have an idea. All the fan can give him a CD, I have read somewhere that he's an ace with cutter.
