Eaton Bumped to Saturday

As expected, the Phillies bumped Adam Eaton in the rotation.

He had been scheduled to start Thursday against Atlanta, but instead he will start Saturday against Washington. Cole Hamels will start Friday. So in essence the rotation looks like this the rest of the way: Jamie Moyer tonight, Kyle Lohse tomorrow night, Kendrick on Thursday, Hamels on Friday, Eaton on Saturday and Moyer on Sunday.

It should be noted that Game 1 of the NLDS is next Wednesday.

That means the Phillies have lined up Hamels to pitch a potential Game 1, and pitch twice in that series if needed.

when is someone going to write about moyer--he is terrible--the phils cant count on him-he always gets hit hard and gives up big innings--he needs to sit out the rest of the season-and manuel needs to go somewhere else to coach!!

deddawg:

So Lohse for the Monday tiebreaker game then...

Louis:

Poor Moyer - just overmatched tonight. He was victimized by a missed called third strike call in the first - awful call - but that aside, the Braves lineup was just too much.

I like the Loshe vs. Hudson matchup. And how's this for pressure - a 22 year old rookie who was at AA earlier in the year facing John Smoltz with the playoffs at stake. Wow. I think KK can do it - he seems like a cool kid.

The rotation sets up Hamels to pitch the one-game playoff if it becomes necessary.

Hey, I missed this somehow... But does anyone know what happens if there is a three-way tie for the Wildcard?

Louis:

Yeah, you're right - if a playoff is Monday, no way Hamels pitches obviously.

Pat H:

Phillies Brass, Please respect the fans, and not subject them to a lame duck GM. A GM ,has to think of the future of the organization. Give Gillick his money, and say thanks, but we'll pick our own pitchers from here on in .. Good riddins !

Bill:

I agree, buyout Gillick and promote Amaro Jr to GM. Then, please, find some pitching that will support our offense along with Hamels, Kendrick and Moyer. A stronger BP and we are on our way to the postseason.

jimmymack:

Last night was groundhog day, visions of the last two years. Like Todd has said all year, it's pitching, pitching, pitching.
Since Gillick has firmed up he's leaving, if it's Amaro or Arbuckle as replacements, name them now and let them be co-GM's, they will have to live with whatever Pat does in the offseason. I got the impression from Monty's remarks in Todd's piece that he is not sold on either, it's what he didn't say that was interesting.
I have lived and died with these guys all year, but "evil" Jim says that if the Phillies start Eaton, they deserve not to win, the decision to let him pitch is just plain idiotic...a 5.71 ERA against the Nats is what we want to throw out there? We could throw Durbin or even Fabio Castro out there and get the same or better, how many times does this guy have to fail before they get it? There is a difference between loyalty and stupidity and we continue to cross it every time he gets the ball. I'll save my rally towel for Saturday, I can cry into it when Eaton implodes.
The opportunities lost in the last two days is just depressing. Gotta go 5-0 the rest of the way, I think the Kyles's can beat Hudson and Smoltz. Yes we can!

Murph:

Tough one. Moyer didn't exactly have his best stuff but the ump blew 2 non-call strikes in the first when Teixeira was up. Glavine, Smoltz and Clemens would have gotten the call and Jamie deserved to get the call too.

I don't want to see Geary again when the game is close. The magic is over there.

We can hit Hudson and Kendrick has been great.

Keep it close before San Diego heads to Milwaukee and I still like our chances.

Now only if Colorado would lose one.

bobby:

Was at the Park last night. Brutal. You simply can't keep going back to your offense and asking for 4 or 5 more runs. Jamie sure didn't look like he wanted to hand over the ball when Charlie came out to the mound. He's a fighter, but it seems like he's just out of gas.

The question is: Was leaving Moyer in any worse than bringing in Geary? Yes, two of the runs that scored off Geary were charged to Moyer, but the reliever's job is to not let those baserunners score. Last time we saw Geary, he hit the first batter he faced with bases loaded in Washington. I feel bad for the guy, but his run is over in Phila.

As for Charlie, I wondered if he should have left Moyer in to get out of his own jam, but you can't slam him for the pitching last night. I do question not pinch-hitting Dobbs for Ruiz in the 9th, and then Coste for the pitcher. Maybe Iguchi in there as well. A comeback was a longshot after Flash gave up the long ball (REALLY long ball!) to make it a 4-run deficit, but you have to pull out all stops at that point. Ruiz doesn't have the punch at the plate to make things happen.

Oh well, I'll go back to my post from last week: Knock off the Mets for the division. They are holding it out to be grabbed like a brass ring!

Go Phils!

Pat H:

Moyer, still gave up (6)runs in (5)innings. Moyer, ran out of gas, in July. All we need is for the pitching not to lose the game, not win it. Looks like were gonna need (10)runs a game to win. This Ballpark is a big disadvatage for home team. The opposing teams eyes light up, when they come in here. Gillicks job,get the team to (93)wins. He's a big bust...Good riddins ! !
