Baseball sources this afternoon have told The Inquirer that Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has been informed he has come up short in his bid to become the next Houston Astros general manager.
Former Phillies general manager Ed Wade is expected to be named the Astros GM later today at a news conference.
Wade is in Houston today.
It is believed the choice came between Wade, Amaro and possibly former Montreal and Baltimore GM Jim Beattie. Wade was the Phillies' general manager from 1998 to 2005 before the Phillies fired him and replaced him with Pat Gillick. Wade's contract with the Phillies expires in December, but he has worked the past two seasons as a scout with the San Diego Padres.
Amaro has been rumored to be a candidate for the GM vacancy with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the Pirates have not contacted Amaro.

He wasn't as bad as everyone thought he was, look at the talent this team has from the Ed Wade era. Now, that doesn't mean I think he should get a second chance. Seems like Houston wanted a yes man, looks like Ed Wade's it.
Glad Amaro didn't get the job because I think he could do a good job as the GM of the Phils, hopefully starting this year. I know I'm going to get ripped for saying this so fire away.

He's reaping the reward for the talent on this club today. Apparently the stro's didn't look at his total inability to function at the deadline...

When he landed in Houston, did he get his parachute caught in the trees?
Now if we can trade Eaton, Barajas and Helms to Houston, I'm good with the hiring.

Ed S., i'm not going to rip you on Ed Wade. i actually agree that this might be a good move for the Astros... Independent of the fact that Wade is a complete toady, he does have a strong draft history and he certainly learned some lessons in Philly about the dangers of no-trade clauses and long term contracts. if he can learn from his mistakes, he might actually do a decent job.

There's no denying Ed Wade could draft, but when it came time to add that extra piece to the puzzle, he always failed.
Remember these names? Mike Williams. Turk Wendell. Dennis Cook. Kelly Stinnett. Todd Jones. Ramon Martinez.
Now it's time for the Phillies to reap the benefits of his mediocre trading ability: How about Hunter Pence for Rod Barajas? Who's with me?

This town, and it's fans, are as mean spirited,as any fans in the country. The way they continue the attack on Wade, really disgusts me. Sure, it was his time to leave. But the fact is he didn't do that bad a job. This is still, Ed Wade's team. Like it, or not,it's true..His trade deadline issues, are over blown. He didn't trade Utley, who everyone wanted. The next year Howard, then Hammels. His best moves, were the ones he didn't make..So why all the hatred ? The salary issues, about over paying players. Baseball does not have a salary cap ! Manuel, another bulls-eye of the Philly faithful..How's he doing ? Thank you,Ed Wade. And I wish you well. Show some class Phillie fans .

'He didn't trade Utley, who everyone wanted. The next year Howard, then Hammels.'
Oh, just stop. No one is that silly to trade Utley or Hammels. Both are young and cheap players (Utley is just starting to get paid), which is just what the Phillies, and every other team, likes.
Also, it was well documented that Wade tried really hard to trade Howard before he was fired and just found no takers.
'The salary issues, about over paying players. Baseball does not have a salary cap !'
Yea, but the Phillies (and other teams) do cap their spending. So while Baseball doesn't have a cap, the Phillies have their own cap, which has been stuck in the 95 to 98 million range for a few too many years given the size of this city.
The Phillies are finally getting out of the bad contracts Wade did. Lieby is gone. Burrell has only next year left. At least with Gillick, when he makes a mistake (and there have been quite a few this year), he doesn't tie himself down for 5 years.
As for his drafts, let's see how well he does without Mike Arbuckle who is a baseball man and not someone from the PR department.
I wish him luck. If he learned from his mistakes and he has some smart baseball men that he listens to, he will be fine. If he is as controlling as the press made him out in Philly, then I'm not going to have to worry about the Astros for awhile and as a Phillies fan, that's a good thing.

8 years, no playoffs = bad job.
Not filling gaps at trade deadline = bad job
Best moves the ones he didn't make = priceless

He "didn't do that bad a job"? Hold on, here. Yes, he may have done a decent job drafting, but there's one small detail being missed here: The Phillies did not make the playoffs once during Ed Wade's tenure. That was his job. Of course, you can certainly lay plenty of blame for that on the ownership as well, but the mark of a GM is how well his team does while he's in charge.
Frankly, I am shocked that Wade is being hired as a GM again. I think the Astros fans can brace themselves for years of playoff-free baseball.

V: Only if he throws in Oswalt too.

I'll take for Oswalt for two dozen baseballs, an autographed picture of Leiber's truck, a Garcia game worn jersey (pretty rare), Rod Brajas video on how to block the plate, Adam Eaton DVD on the mastery of pitching, "How to hit for power" video by Wes Helms and a box of Trojans (unopened) from Shane Victorino...and throw in a all you can eat pass to Ashburn Alley and a skydiving lesson for Ed Wade next time Houston comes to town.

Oh hell yes. Good suggestion, Louis. Oswalt/Pence for Barajas/Eaton. That works, right?
