Rockies vs. Indians?

indians.jpgI wish I could see the preseason odds -- not that I'm into gambling or anything -- on the Rockies and Indians to make the World Series. I'm sure if I had put $100 each on the Rockies and Indians -- hypothetically speaking, of course -- I'd probably be pretty happy right now.

Of course, the Indians haven't won anything yet.

But they took a 3-1 lead over the Red Sox in the ALCS last night at Jacobs Field. Of course, everybody will mention that the Red Sox overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. But if I were a betting man -- which I'm not -- I'd take the Indians right now.

But that's just me.

*

And don't think folks at MLB and Fox aren't saying, "Rockies and Indians? Who's going to watch?"

*

The Rockies said Monday they aren't getting tired of pouring champagne and beer over each other's heads (Coors Light, naturally). And really, why would they ? It's like hitting somebody in the face with a shaving cream pie or dropping a water balloon on somebody from the roof of a building. It can't get old.

Mike's Baseball Rants comes up with some interesting facts about the Rockies' ridiculous run.

Click here to see how some Phillies prospects are performing in the Arizona Fall League. Third baseman Mike Costanzo is hitting .059 with 10 strikeouts in 17 at-bats.

V:

It's great and all that the Phillies drafted a local kid to anchor third base for the future.

But when is the future - 2012?

Seriously, when is this kid going to get the big picture and realize minor league ball isn't fun and games, and realize that he actually has to hit?

jimmymack:

I'm looking forward to a Rockies, Indians series, I think it may turn out to be one of the best in years. Good pitching and hitting, excellent bullpens and nutso fans in both cities. This will be new to both teams and it should be fun. Can the Rockies keep this pace up? Can a team with Kenny Lofton win it all?
I like the tribe in seven. Call it Major League, part III. Can we get Bob Ucker to do play by play?

Problem for Fox will certainly be 10:15 pm games in Colorado. They deserve it for shoving new show promos and he who shall not be named down our throat.

John in LA:

My biggest beef with Dane Cook - besides the fact that he's only marginally funny and wears a lot of the same t-shirts I buy from Target - is his hair. Call me a priss (and a few of you have), but big boys wear clean shirts on TV and definitely use combs. Since when do grown men intentionally mess up their hair? Did I miss that blog, Todd? This is almost as bad as sculpting your eyebrows and frosting - actually, nothing is THAT bad - but am I right here? Plus the fact that it looks like he couldn't swing a bat to save his life.

Now as to the Rockies/Indians possibility: I like it. And wasn't it Kenny Lofton who said Philly was just about the worst place he ever played?

Gun to my head -- I can't go against the Rockies. They're just too used to winning at this point. I'm actually looking forward to it, though.

And ever since the Phils drafted Costanzo I was praying he'd be good so I could milk out an entire career's worth of Seinfeld jokes.

Supposedly, Costanzo convinced his Fall League squad to switch to cotton uniforms claiming it would give them an advantage of being "five degrees cooler than the other team."

We'll have to see how that works out.

Al:

Hey John, I don't like Dane Cook either but his hair is fine. It's called fashion and it's not the same as it was 30 years ago. Women like that stuff maybe you should try it

jimmymack:

I'm with John on this one, last time I looked like that, I was coming off a 3 day bout with the flu. My wife wouldn't even let me go get the Inquirer from the driveway.
Damn, had I known I was looking fashionable, I would have cut the grass and shared my look with the neighbors.

Marty in LA:

Gotta love Zo's comment about Fox and MLB and a Mountain Time Zone WS. As much fun as this postseason has been for a true baseball fan, it's Nightmare on Baseball Street for the money-first guys (which is fine by me).

Of 6 series so far, there have been 4 sweeps, 1 series that went one game over the minimum, and the current one which might also be just a 1-game-over. Of the 5 big market cities that went to the postseason, only one survived the first round (and that was predestined; two of 'em had to play each other). Overall, there are 17 "if necessary" games in the postseason, and in 2007 there's a chance that only TWO of 'em will be "necessary". Talk about minimal revenue!

James:

I am going to have to be the spoil-sport who disagrees. While the Rockies have been on a hot run, I just can't get any sort of positive vibes from 'em. Between the slightly creepy "God Squad" thing they've got going on, and the fact it's a team without history, I am meh.

Denver got lucky with some real good guys to come up through their farm system, but their front office is far, far too tight-fisted (The only team who spends less revenue back on the team? The Pittsburgh Pirates.) Expect 'em to return to their sub-.500 form in regular time after a fire sale when these guys want to make some money.

The franchise has a terrible record, has no signs of really reversing it despite this fortuitous hot streak, no real rivalry, and honestly, no real fans beyond what has magically appeared in the past three weeks.

You might disagree, but I say 1977. The Kansas City Royals were one of the hottest teams in baseball, even went to the World Series with an even _hotter_ streak than today's Rockies. What happened after that streak came to an end? Well, they got swept in the Series, then... Well, who equates Kansas City with good baseball?

Right.

James:

Oh, and a funny side note about the terrible ratings:

The 2007 Little League World Series pulled larger ratings than the 2007 NLCS.

Ouch.

Shaun:

Marty: You are wrong, the '77 Kansas City Royals weren't swept, they lost 3-2 in the ALCS to the Yankees. They also didn't end with a hotter streak. They did have a better streak in the regular season with 24 wins out of 25 games (14 in a row) but then ended the season with 3 out of 8. Also, keep in mind that only one of those teams they faced (for 3 games) in that 24 game streak had a winning record. Only a single win in the Rockies' streak (the first) came against a team with a losing record. And seven of these wins came in the playoffs and one on a tie-breaker for crying out loud. No team, EVER, has had this hot of a streak at this time of the year.

Shaun:

Oops, I was responding to James, not Marty. Marty's right of course...

Shaun:

One more thing: the Kansas City Royals did great for a good number of years after '77. They swept the Yankees in the '80 ALCS and won the World Series in '85. Things didn't go sour for them until after their general manager left and the team owner died in '93.

Joe Torre:

I am now available to take the reigns of your hapless team.

just think-me, and my bud Rudy Guiliani, all cozy with the Philly Phanatic!

Charly can stay and fill in for the Phanatic now and then.

just IM me man!

PS- Is your owner an idiot?- if so, I can handle it!- got experience.
