The Phillies released their 2008 schedule today, and here are a few highlights:
-- Opening Day is March 31.
-- The Phillies open and close the season at home against the Nationals.
-- They play the Red Sox and Angels at home June 16-22.
-- The Phillies also play the blue Jays at home May 16-18.
-- They travel on the road to play the Rangers and A's.
-- They do not play the Mets at home in September.
-- Like this season, they finish the season with a six-game homestand against the Braves and Nationals.

I like the idea of opening and closing against the Nats - Start hot, end the same way. It's cute that the Phillies netted some big-time interleague games to keep the turnstiles moving, but in reality, it'd be better to face the scrubs of the AL. This isn't college basketball, where RPI points come from playing a tough schedule. I don't know - that's how I see it.

As popular as the interleague games are, does anyone remember any of them from this past year? When you ask me what I'll remember, it will be the two four game series against the Mets and the four series against the Braves and Marlins in August and September.
That the Phils don't play the Mets in September is a travesty and an example of everything wrong with the league. Don't even get me started on the unbalanced schedules that interleague play foists on teams.

What a joke!!! How could they not give us a chance to sweep the mets at home in september?? I bet the mets get to play the royals,d-rays and all the other scrub teams in the AL. But of course they'll have their precious subway series im sure. what a joke!!!

They DO play the Mets in N.Y. in September. In fact, the only non-division team that they will play in September is the Brewers.

Oh poor Mr. Met. Must have bumped that oversized head when he collapsed after watching his team, er, collapse. Uh, buddy, the average age of your team is about 38, you only have one young reliable (or semi-reliable since he stunk most of the second half) starter in Maine. The rest of your rotation is old, destined for the DL or nonexistant. Your closer ends his season in mid-August every year and just gives up game winning hits and homers for the last six weeks. And the only guy in your lineup who you can really rely on day in and day out is David Wright. The Phillies should be more worried about the Braves -- and maybe the Nats -- than the Mets this year. YOU had YOUR shot (2006) and blew it. We still have a good run ahead of us.

What's with the Interleague schedule? It use to be play a division of the opposite league with a rival series thrown in there.
For instance, this past season we played the AL Central and our rival was the Blue Jays (after a stint when it was the Red Sox, and before that the Yankees and Orioles).
Now we're playing the AL East and West, we still play the Jays (which I assume is still our rival) but we also play the Sox again? Frankly, I was happy not to see the Sox in our stadium anymore. Talk about a bunch of bandwagoners that come out of the woodwork when they play here.

Good post Realistic Observer. The Mets might be in the mix, but by no means do they start out as an odds-on favorite entitled to the Division, at least not in their current form. This year was their best shot and they absolutely blew it.
The Braves will be very tough and the Nats played .500 ball the second half of this year (thanks in large part to those late games against the Mets) - maybe they'll get a boost from good crowds in their new ballpark too. Even Florida should be better. It should be a very competitive Division next year.

This is still tentative, right? This isn't absolutely exact yet, right? Because there is NO REASON the Phillies should play the Blue Jays in consecutive years, and twice in the same season. And if the NL East is supposed to play the AL West in interleague play this year, why aren't the Mariners on the slate? Maybe some of us would like to see Greg Dobbs and Jamie Moyer against their old team? And what's with the two-game series?
