Minor Move

The Phillies yesterday claimed lefthander Shane Youman off waivers from the Pirates.

Not exactly earth shattering, but it's a little more depth for the pitching staff.

Craig:

Why??? The Phillies killed him.

LB:

Oh boy!!! Now I can't wait for Spring Training!

jimmymack:

The more arms the better. God knows, he might be a starter by mid-year.

Something tells me we won't live up to Jimmy Rollins's new "100 win" proclamation if Shane Youman is starting by mid-year.

Dan C.:

Bullpen Help? Warm body for Spring training? I'm confused by this one.

Pat H:

Lefty's in this league, have (9) lives...Why not..

Q:

Where do the Phillies come up with these stiffs? No wonder they can't make it deep into October. This sound too much like the great 10 games the Phillies got from Floyd Youmans off waivers back in 1988. See http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/stats/historical/individual_stats_player.jsp?c_id=phi&playerID=124684&HS=True

steve:

This must be Gillick's thinking: "If you take out his career numbers against the Phils his numbers are not half bad".

He's Triple A fodder that might pitch a few innings here or there, but I doubt he would make the main club out of spring unless it is as a LOOGY. Just adding cheap pitching depth, and that’s never a bad thing.

Now the Melvin Mora rumors I find interesting... Mora could be a nice defensive upgrade and make a great platoon mate with Dobbs, though a fairly expensive one.

Displaced Phil:

Geez, chill. He's a freakin' warm body for spring training/minors. Decent lefties are hard to find and he'll fill out the Triple A roster. Remember most of the pitching prospects are 2A, so they need to fill spots on Ottawa's roster. At most, he's a temporary emergency call up. It's not like they're staking the season on this guy.

Tim:

Why does anyone have negative comments about this move? It cost them nothing and he has potential. He's young. Its tough to judge him on 1 season split between AAA and the Majors. But even if he doesn't amount to anything, he cost them nothing. Its not worth getting upset or excited about, its just another cheap arm.

Fast Eddie:

It's like Shane Rawley and Floyd Youmans had a love child!

clinton nj:

Off the subject a little...did anyone see the video of Larussa getting arrested and trying to walk a straight line and say his ABC's??? I love how you see all these DWI commercials on tv about how they are cracking down on people drinking and driving, yet another sports/celebrity gets off rather lightly after getting arrested. Larussa looked wasted, he couldn't even walk a straight line and fully say the alphabet. It's such BS that these celebs ge off 99% of the time. It's such a joke!!!!

Tim:

Clinton - I don't know why you think Larussa got off easy, I think that is a pretty standard punishment for DWI - probation, fine, loss of license, DUI classes. Now if you think the punishment for DWI is too light, that's another subject, but I think his "sentence" is in line with the average joe.

Talvenada:

GUYS,

Firstly, he's a lefty and we only have Romero, Smith, Zagurski & Castro.

Secondly, Paul Byrd, Justin Germano and others have been plucked off the waiver wire. It's probably a 5-10% shot to get lucky.

Thirdly, the off-season is 6 mos., not 6 days; and if you had a 6 mo. project on your job and somebody said your project sucks at the 1-2 mo. mark, you'd flip out, over and up a prominent digit.

km:

Whats up with this trade rumor Re: baltimore and Mora thats on this site today. Im not too familiar with the guy but his numbers seem basically identical to dobbs. Dont really see much point in making this move...

Talvenada:

KiM,

Mora hits RH and w/o Rowand we would need another R-Bat to go w/ Burrell. Plus, he's a good fielder, and won't need a defensive replacement like Burrell of monkeys.

clinton nj:

Tim, I dont think he lost his license though, just the fines and the probation and classes, which is nothing. The loss of license is what hurts, and I dont think he lost it!

clinton nj:

Tim, I dont think he lost his license though, just the fines and the probation and classes, which is nothing. The loss of license is what hurts, and I dont think he lost it! And you got to admit that alot of athletes/celebs get off without losing their licenses all the time.
