The Phillies' Top 10 Prospects

carrasco.jpgI'm sure this has been posted elsewhere, but it hasn't been posted here ...

Baseball America's Dec. 2 issue lists the Phillies' top 10 prospects, so I thought I'd share them for people who might be interested:

1. Carlos Carrasco, RHP. BA says, "With Cole Hamels entrenched as the Phillies' No. 1 starter, Carrasco could make a nice compliment as a No. 2 by 2009.
2. Adrian Cardenas, 2B. Some scouts believe, as BA writes, "Cardenas' ultimate destination is to left field, where he'll have more than enough bat."
3. Joe Savery, LHP. BA says, "He'll open 2008 in low Class A and could move quickly if he performs well ... he could make his big league debut by 2009."
4. Josh Outman, LHP. BA says, "Outman will begin 2008 back in double-A, but he could make his debut at Citizens Bank Park before September. He profiles as a No. 3 starter."
5. Kyle Drabek, RHP. BA says, "A potential frontline starter, Drabek has been right on schedule with his rehab program ... Philadelphia won't rush him."
6. Dominic Brown, OF. BA says, "He opened 2007 with three games in high Class A, and Brown might return there ... based on how he handled that initial experience."
7. Michael Bourn, OF. Traded to Houston for Brad Lidge.
8. Mike Costanzo, 3B. Traded to Houston for Lidge.
9. Greg Golson, OF. BA says, "The Phillies think he can play a big league center field right now, and if everything clicks offensively, he could make the final leap quickly."
10. Lou Marson, C. BA says, "The Phillies suddenly have several options behind the plate, so there' no reason to push Marson."

Jimmy Rollins was honored today at City Hall. He's been busy in Philly.

National League games averaged 2 hours, 48 minutes last season.

Games at Citizens Bank Park averaged 2:57, the highest average at any NL ballpark. The Phillies' road games lasted 2:59, also the highest average in the league. That's a product of the league's highest-scoring offense and one of the worst pitching staffs in the league.

As a beat writer who writes on deadline every night, these numbers did not surprise me. Not a little bit. For a comparison, the San Diego Padres' road games averaged a league-low 2:43, while games at AT&T Park in San Francisco averaged a league-low 2:38.

Where does 2B Brad Harman, recently promoted by
the Phillies to the 40 active-member roster, fit
as to prospect number, future position, and
year to reach the major league?

Richard Chalal:

Like Cole Hamels in 2006 and Kyle Kendrick in 2007, could the Phillies find starting and relief pitching for 2008 in their farm system?

What's interesting to me is how Carrasco, Savery, and Outman are all on track to play significant roles in 2009. Assuming they all make it (big assumption), assuming Moyer retires at the end of '08, and assuming Myers is still in the rotation for '09 and not the pen, that shapes up to be one young rotation.

Rich Dubee :(:

Great, by 2009 I'll be fired. I have to suffer thru another year of Eaton, Gordon, Madson, Hamels, Myers on the DL? Maybe I can work at the Sears scratch and dent store, it'll be just like working here.

Savery shouldn't be here any earlier than 2010.

Chris:

I think Savery could be up as early as this season. Why would we have to wait until 2010 for a guy who was a college junior when he was drafted?

kfil:

My question is, why do the Phillies stick to the slow process for pitchers. It does not work for everyone. Carasaco and Outman, why not give one of them the #5 spot this year and give them time to progress and learn in the majors. If it does not work out then send them back for more maturing. Plus learning from Moyer is a huge benefit, he has been a great mentor for Hamels.

Additionally, I think Meyers is back in the Bullpen in 09, after we lose Lidge to free agency. Lidge does well, he want sa lot of money and we let him go, he does not do well enough, we move him to set-up or let him go either way Meyers is back where is is strongest and happiest! Then we have Hamels, Kendrick, Carasco, Outman, Savery for '09, young but very inexpensive!

Cadrenas??? Is he for real?

V:

kfil:
Are you serious?

"Then we have Hamels, Kendrick, Carasco, Outman, Savery for '09, young but very inexpensive!"

Yeah, and very inexperienced, unproven and shaky. And ---likely--- watching playoff baseball from home and not the dugout.

When you think about rushing young pitchers up to the majors, think Gavin Floyd. The slow approach is as much (or more) about getting the mental maturity as it is about honing the physical skills. Some of those guys who come up too early are ruined forever.

Does Zagurski factor into the bullpen in 2008?

kfil - I don't think they'll yank Myers around any more. I may be wrong but I think they understand he has to settle in to one role or the other and I think they've decided that it's easier to find closers than it is to find quality starters. I can't say I disagree with that. But pitching is such a gamble all around, that only time will tell. I do like that they've got some decent looking pitching prospects in the works. Carasco seems like a good one.

kfil:

V: No, not serious, but BA has those 3 guys projected to be a part of the team by '09 and all of them are starters. It makes me wonder about the slow process that projects 3 young inexperienced players to start contiributing in the game at the same time. Agreed it works for some, but not all.
I do not othink that rushing is the answer, but a slow process may not be it either.

Top 10 Prospects List??? What about Jamarillo, the Phil's seem to be very excited about him and he is not even on that list. Any thoughts???

JaVee:

I agree, what about Jaramillo, Zagurski, J.A. Happ, Scott Mathieson, and Segovia? Where do they fit in?

Chet Artysiewicz:

On BA's top 10...Jason Jaramillo isn't listed. I thought he was our catcher of the future and Ruiz & Co. were holding down the position till he was ready.

Given that Costanzo & Bourn are gone, who else merits those two slots in the top 10?

"I think Savery could be up as early as this season. Why would we have to wait until 2010 for a guy who was a college junior when he was drafted?"

Because that is how long it normally takes.

The logic expressed in the above quote is utterly nonsensical. There is nothing particularly unusual or impressive about being a college junior when drafted. The majority of draftees are college players. The number of them who make it to the majors in their first full professional seasons is minuscule. Neither is it typical to make it to the majors in one's second full professional season, not even for first-round picks.

Savery will be 24 on Opening Day 2010, a normal age for a major league rookie.
