Gillick Is Optimistic, But Coming Up Empty

benson.jpgPat Gillick said he is optimistic.

But that doesn't mean he's excited.

He sounded less than thrilled yesterday talking to reporters about the market for pitching (or maybe he was just less than thrilled because he had to speak with us). The Phillies continue to look for starting pitching and bullpen help, but so far have come up empty. But he said he is hopeful the Phillies can make a move before the winter meetings end Thursday afternoon at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

As a reporter, I would love that.

Kris Benson anybody?

The Phillies plan to watch him throw later this month. Organizationally, the Phillies think Benson is best suited to bounce back from his right shoulder surgery, when compared to other injured pitchers like Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia and Jon Lieber.

*

FYI -- Type "Kris Benson" into Google Images and 90 percent of the pictures are of his wife, Anna Benson.

Why?

*

Jim Salisbury writes why Aaron Rowand seems unlikely to return to the Phillies next season. That might change only if Rowand's agent backs off his demand for a five-year deal. If Rowand would take a three-year deal, the Phillies would go hard after him.

The triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs recently named their pig mascot PorkChop. But they just renamed it Ferrous.

Once again, PC has gone over the edge to the point of parody. So a team mascot, that happens to be a PIG, can't be called Pork Chop. I don't know which is worse: the team changing the name after people whined about it, or the people who did the whining to begin with. Is there ANYONE left on the planet with a sense of humor? Are people REALLY that thin-skinned? What a joke.

Welcome to another example of the pussification of America. I'm soo tired of people placating others because they are too narrow minded to see the fun side of things. The name PorkChop was humorous and should have stayed. Does that mean when I order pork chops at a restaurant I have to be cognizant that others may become offended. Give me a break!

The Phillies news from the winter meetings is just downright depressing.

The Federation of Independent Streetwalkers & Hookers (FISH) has anounced it's intention to picket all Lehigh Valley baseball games. Pussy Galore, the group's spokesperson, said the name Iron Pigs is "an insult to the hard working easy woman of the region. We may be hard and we may be pigs, but to call attention to that fact by naming a team after us is unacceptable". Plans for the popular "homers for hookers" promotion on Father's Day are now being reviewed.
In a related development, Huggy Bear LaFluer, head of Pimps Local 69, plans to seek an injunction against Chris Wheeler for using the term "middle in", claiming a trademark infringment for his group of workers, who claim they invented the term for far sighted customers.

dude:

Why not just name each team a number. The Philadelphia 7B The New York 23BB The Green Bay 17F, The Ottawa 12H. The letters would be for what sport they play. Then nobody would be offended. Except, the team called the 69. That would upset the feminists and religous right. So, we leave out 69.

If the name of a sports team concerns you enough to complain to the point that they change it, your life must be incredibly easy.
Imagine shit like this happening 50 years ago.
Liberalism, its flushing our society down the toilet.

Okay, funny stuff above! Let's get back to baseball. Sign Rowand for a 4th year and be done with it. He is not a big part of the offense anyway, he is a nice addition. They are worried about his health for his style of play. 1st the wall incident, Maybe defines Rowand as a team player, was due to lack of padding on the wall, he pointed it out when he first came to the team and the Phil's were set to install it days later when the Phil's went out of town. 2nd Chicago Collision, if you look at the video he stumbled from the field and lost sight of Utley and the ball, plus neither one was calling the ball. He is an excellent defender a great club guy and has made improvements in his offensive abilities. Do the Phil's have something going on in the Farm System that will fill a need for the OF in'09. Burrell is about 90% gone, and Werth may leave next year or price himself out of Philly. Then you have Victorino running all over the outfield. Phil's need Rowand!

dude:

How about we name each team after its payroll?
The Philadelphia 105 million -vs- The Washington 65 million. That might motivate the players, or offend them, not sure.

Nothing more moving than a bunch of white people whining about their state of oppression. Fight the power, whiteys! Will America ever give you a fair shake?

dude:

Too bad Whitey doesn't have a fine orginazation like the NAACP to help bury the words they doesn't like.

Steve Niebler:

The best thing about signing Chris Benson is that we get Anna Benson too! She can take Arron Rowand's place in motivating the team!

Tim:

No need to get racial on this board like people do on other boards. The commentary is more on becoming too politically correct anymore..

judas_priest:

Dude:

While a chunk of the left (and calling that particular group "liberals" is inaccurate) does engage in that kind of behavior, it is not restricted to them. Others do it today, and anyone familiar with the social history of this country knows of similar inanities from the past. Your blaming it on "liberals" says a lot more about your limited frame of reference that it does about reality.

BTW, it is only the extreme form of this desire to rename offensive terms that is absurd. Without that kind of push, words like Nigger, Spic, Dago, Mick and Kike might still be in common use.

James L (forever a Phillies Fan!):

"Too bad Whitey doesn't have a fine orginazation like the NAACP to help bury the words they doesn't like."

My man Whitey.... I loved his words. Never heard of anyone wanting to bury them.
