The Clemens Interview

In a total bombshell, Roger Clemens says that Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes has used steroids.

(Somebody clearly had some free time to splice together one of Clemens' statements.)

Phil Sheridan offers his take on the Clemens mess. And it's a mess.

Way too much spare time!!!

So that's why he is still on TV at 105 years old. I suspect Andy Rooney has been on the juice since Babe Ruth was a rookie.
Seems fair.

What the heck is Phil Sheridan talking about. Wouldn't he be upset if someone accused him of doing something illegal to save their own butt. I'm not sure if Clemens used steroids but it's the kind of politically correct article I see so much of in the papers. It's why most papers are in trouble. Hacks like Sheridan score politically correct points by bashing a person it is socially acceptable to trash. It makes me kinda sad to see it. Clemens was correct about one thing when he asked if 25 years earned at least some respect. Not according to Phil Sheridan. Not according to Phil Sheridan because it's politically correct to use any means to destroy Clemens to sell papers. I realize Sheridan has to write something on the subject. However, why does Clemens former trainer get instant credibility? Why isn't anyone in the media showing at least some doubt about the trainer's testimony? Everything I've read in the Inquirer and heard on the radio is rightously opposed to Clemens. Something stinks like a saurkraut fart and that is the all to familiar stench of political correctness. So much for reporters having guts to buck the norm. Guys like Sheridan act like they're exposing some sort of great social injustice and are saving us from the inherent evil of our society when all they're being is politically correct. They are very small men who are conforming to the norm who are being...politally correct, for God's sake.
Just another Philly fan booing. Send the bum to the Newark Star Ledger!

Well Johnny P, Clemens trainer accused Petite, and guess what...it was true! Petite confessed to it. So why would he lie about Clemens?? Clemens has always been an A-hole and jerkoff! That incident back in 2000 when he beamed Piazza in the head in the regular season and then in the world series threw the broken bat at Piazza and said he didnt know what he threw, now that sounds like someone who is on drugs to me, and to boot a little roid rage!!!

johnny p:

Clinton, maybe you're right. I'm not saying Clemens is a real nice guy. What I do know is that he was and is immensely talented. He is also extremely competetive. Hitters and opposing teams are the enemy. If the guy is a jerk he still deserves, after all he's done, a fair shake. Do you realize how tight the vice was on this guy McNamee's balls.
Remember the way Richie Ashburn talked about pitchers. He truly believed they where idiots. Richie was a great guy to us because he was a Phillie. Ask most pitchers who faced him and they'll probably say he was a prick.
Clemens had frightening talent. He was extremely competitive. He was the real deal from the beginning. He's also an easy mark for the likes of Sheridan who is trying to make good because Barry Bonds got trashed in the press. I think the trashing of Clemens is worse and the evidence is thinner. I think it's all about political correctness. Future generations will laugh at us for our political correctness. It's something we're gonna want to cover up. Kinda like the Salem witch trials. I just wish it wouldn't enter into sports. It's the little men like most of the guys on WIP and guys like Phil Sheridan who let it enter into sports. I realize reporters and radio personalities are under the watchful eye of the political correct police but somebody please show some balls and buck the system so we don't forever more have to walk on egg shells while interacting with each other.

Josh M:

Ah, the truth comes out. With all the speculation and repeated air play of Clemens interview and press conference it was nice to be able to see something that made me laugh.

When I was growing up, I had a posters of Clemens & Michael Jordan on my wall. Clemens was an all start and a dominating pitcher BEFORE the steroids. It is so disappointing to see that he may have cheated when it wasn't necessary. I don't know that there will every be a smoking gun, like with Bonds, but until I see something that convinces me otherwise, I believe that he is a cheater!

On a lighter note... Does anybody know when the Lenny Dykstra press conference is going to be? I never suspected that he did steroids :-)

Grizzle:

Johnny P--

I think you are generally correct regarding sports media. They are very quick to condemn prior to all the facts being known.

However, I can't see why McNamee would tell Mitchell what he did if it was patently false. You claim that his "ball's were tight in the vice," but Mitchell did not have subpoena power. He had nothing to gain by giving up this information. Mitchell and the Feds obviously have no other informatino regarding Clemens, or it would have been reported. So what incentive is there for McNamee to lie?

The only strategy that Clemens can play if he wants to "clear" his name, is to go after McNamee hard, as evidenced by the lawsuit he filed. The one thing the Mitchell report pointed out was the lack of hard evidence against him, therefore it's clear that it becomes a he said/he said debate; the harder Clemens fights the more believable he becomes. At least I think that's his gameplan.

clinton, nj:

A woman on the radio made a good point. Her husband had to get prescription for the B-12 shots he was taking, and said you had to do so, so why doesnt Clemens get the name of the doctor or a paper trail of some sort to back up his story of B-12? And why did it take him almost a month to start defending himself? He should have been on 60 minutes the sunday following the Mitchell report or doing something sooner. Just like Baroid, Clemens would most likely have been a hall of famer before 1998, but we'll never know for sure. They both have that same A-hole attitude anyway, so the hell with em' both!!

huh?:

What would Macnamee's motivation be for being dishonest? Once I see a plausible reason, something for him to gain personally by dragging down Clemens, I'll see a possibility in Macnamee being the liar. Clemens has nothing to lose by challenging him through the media. The only hope Clemens has is to cast doubt on Macnamee. Looks like a few people have bought into it already.

Politically correct? I don't know how that plays into it but you and my brother would sure get along. Everything that goes wrong in the world can always be traced to the liberals.

What a simple world.

Bench:

You just have to love it. Sports was supposed to be an outlet for our everyday pressures, much like Hollywood and the movies. Somehow it moved away from entertainment and over to the "Business Section" when outrageous salaries came into vogue. Thank goodness for Roger and his diatibes to bring us back to the days when sports was entertainment and we could all forget about the trouble our kids were in or how many days before the rent was due. Thanks, Roger. Now, MGM, That's Entertainment!

Scorekeeper:

McNamee has nothing to gain by lying about Clemens. If he had said Clemens was dirty, and he knew different, then he'd be in a bit of trouble. He'd be liable for slander. But if he knew it to be true, no crime exists. If Mcnamee is telling the truth, he's a dirtbag drug pusher who shot needles into athletes for money. But it doesn't matter who tells the truth if it is the truth. Truth doesn't change based on the speaker.

Which brings us to the lawsuit filed by Clemens. Did anyone notice that there is no dollar amount sought? The lawsuit isn't a punitive measure against McNamee or an effor tot clear Roger's name. It is the perfect excuse for Clemens to avoid talking about the issue in front of Congress. "Sorry, Senator. I can't discuss that because of pending litigation."

Johnny P. I've read dozens of your posts. You're pretty damn smart and I have come to respect your opinions, even if I don't always agree with you. When it comes to the media jumping the gun (Duke rape case, etc) you are right on. But I think you are wrong about Phil Sheridan. He's been a pretty good writer for a long time. The idea that he writes only to sell papers is off. Most of us don't even buy the paper anymore. We read it for free on this website. No single article is going to sell papers. Even if we buy the paper, it's paid for before we know the content of the articles. You mention having the balls to stand up against the political correctness of slamming Clemens. I see it from the other side of the same coin. It takes balls to hold a living legend accountable for his actions. And it is the job of you, me, Phil Sheridan, and every single one of us who loves baseball as much as you clearly have demonstrated.

Anyway, Clemens is an a$$, but Johnny P is right again: so what. He was an amazing pitcher, and that's all we really should expect from the guy: honest, clean, pitching. He was a bit more amazing after he turned 36, though. I'm not saying he used the juice, but I won't be surprised if it turns out he has. And if he has, I'll still love baseball as much as you guys because that's what we do.

Excellent point Bryan.

johnny p:

I probably was too hard on Phil Sheridan. He has a job to do and I apologize for ripping into him a little too hard. I think most likely Clemens did use steroids. So at the end of the day Sheridan and the rest of the media are probably correct in this case.

Norma:

These college kids DO have waaay too much time on their hands! LOL!

On the other hand.....I did always wonder about that 60 Minutes crew. Hmmmmm?
