...Shoobies are so sensitive! (See comments from that link). You can put a local in her place! We were just having a little fun by describing the shoobie-themed boat from Saturday's Night in Venice, decorated with that annoying, er, colorful PA plate on the back. Really, we love the shoobies down here at the shore. See, here's a story I did that's practically a LOVE letter to my neighbors from Philly. I forgot you guys can sometimes feel like locals have some underground secret society thing going on. I know sometimes it looks like there's an EZ-pass lane for locals at the bagel store. (There is). Believe me, we appreciate all the money you spend down here and the joie de vivre you bring as you turn our Boardwalks into the Schuylkill (in a good way!) and our beaches into Rittenhouse Square. I'd be lost without you. And now that I have your attention, here's a helpful hint: the streets in Margate run al-pha-bet-i-cally.

"Our" beaches and "our" boardwalks? There's that attitude again...
We should just be so greatful that you "allow" us to use them.

I happen to love the shore and enjoy going there on weekends and an occasional week for a nice break. People who live down there all summer long sure do have an attitude. You see all the surfers at the 7th street surf shop acting like the are right out in LA or San Diego. Common, the Jersey Shore is no better than any of the beach towns along the East Coast and if you really want the rockin beach, its in LA and San Diego! Thats where the real surfers go and the ladies are hotter than the sand. This whole mentality of someone who lives at the Jersey Shore being special is a joke. 1st Its New Jersey! Second, there are a million places that make it look like a sub par escape. So deal with it, call us shoobies, who cares, at least we are not lost in a mentallity that the whole world wants to be a jersey shore regular! Florida Beaches also totally beet the Jersey Shore.

You know the truth is: the shore towns don't like tourists... and the general attitude from shore towns is that tourists are only good to pay for things. Things like beach tags... which are almost free to locals ($13/season), and $5/day for anyone making a day trip to the beach...
Or things like municipal WIFI... which OC plans to give away for free to residents and pay for by selling to visitors at $6/day.
Forget the shore. Forget Ocean City. Forget you.
Call me anything you like. Just call me in Vegas, Orlando, or Myrtle Beach.

I once knew a guy in Ocean City whose car license plate said "SHBGOHM," which was supposed to be shorthand for Shoobie Go Home.
These days there's a homemade sign tacked to a tree along Route 47 North in Cape May County that says the same thing, except with all the vowels.
Stay classy!

Gotta love the shoobie backlash to your snarky comments. Having visited OC one week a year, for all of my 44 years, I never realized that you locals suffer all of us dumb out of towners, willing to pay $3,000 a week for a mediocre rental house in high season. And I'm dumb enough to fly in from Chicago to give you the opportunity to empty my wallet and max my credit cards. Looking forward to stealing your parking space and having loud parties late at night.

To Citizen Mom,
I go past that sign all the time coming home from Wildwood. There used to be a sign that said Tourist Information with an arrow pointing up to the handmade sign.
The road that it's on isn't even near any tourist spots. All they get is the traffic coming in and out.

The term shoobie - came from the original visitors - who came down by train and brought their lunches to the beach in a shoe box. It's probably one of the most unoffensive slurs ever.
We teased them when they asked "which way to the beach" but so what - I can assure you there is nothing more annoying than a local's only mentality. Those idiots in Hawaii who fist fight at their break have no clue.
Let me let you in on a little secret - the locals who despise the visitors the most - have empty little lives filled with depression and envy. Despising the tourists is all they have between their warm Budweisers in their dark pubs, and their spotty jobs.
So laugh off the shoobie thing (consider the source) everybody else is happy to see you!
The commenter who said lighten up was right.
Oh and Steve while I agree the ipods are pretty lame for enjoying the natural beauty of sun, surf and sky I have to tell you making out at the beach is what summer is all about, amigo!
I'll never forget that dingy Wildwood rental and those awesomely cute waitress...or sneaking in and out of that cramped attic loft in that Stone Harbor beach cottage ...or ...well you get the idea...
Have an awesome weekend and a great August everyone!

Way to back track Amy. Tell you what we could do, we'll stay away from "your" beaches and you keep those annoying, drunkin, irritating moronic south jerzey kids out of Manayunk and Olde City. Also, please stay off the Schuylkill until you learn how to drive.

Why do you annoying people always say in your whinny voices. "I am going DOWNASHORE"? Do you not know how to separate the words or just say "I am going to the beach" like a normal person? I wil be glad when summer is over so I do not have to listen to people here always whinning "DOWNASHORE"!!
Do not get me wrong, I love the beach and the ocean like everyone else, but DOWNASHORE is so damn annoying.....

Being a map person, I checked a map of Margate after I read your statement that the streets in Margate run "al-pha-bet-i-cally," which turns out not to be entirely true. It appears that Margate's founding fathers could not spell: Granville - Haverford - Huntington - Hanover - Iroquois? Also, Knight before Kenyon? Just sayin.
