Ventnor Pier, Uncovered

ventnorpier2.jpg
The massive pier reconstruction has begun in Ventnor, a controversial project that may had the incidental effect of galvanizing an opposition movement among second-homers in this town. In any case, new pilings are being installed, and the pier's floor/roof/cover (a designation that depends on whether your perspective is fisherman walking out on the pier, beach trekker passing underneath or slacker poking around at the sand in the shade) ripped off. It's starting to look a little like Stonehenge out there: ventnorpier3.jpg

$600,000 DROPPED IN THE OCEAN

The pier reconstruction is costing $600,000 more than it should because Ventnor's Commissioners failed to award a lower bid. They blew a deadline
to make the award then hid the fact. Upcoming on the citizens' website weloveventnor.org, launched this week.

Denny Hannigan:

Maybe the bid wasn't handled as well as it could have been but preserving the Ventnor Pier is a good thing. As years have gone by, most of the landmarks and icons of the Jersey shore have been torn down, closed or converted to condo's. It is important that some of the great memory makers for generations of shore goers are saved. This is the last public pier along the South Jersey shore - the area boasts family fishing fun - let's live up to that claim and hold on to this piece of seashore history.

The Equalizer:

"...galvanizing an opposition movement among second-homers in this town." Did you really say that Amy? The "Enough is Enough" movement has people galvanized all over Ventnor and from every walk of life. Your error is understandable as you wrote it months ago. The "Enough is Enough" team is made of highly qualified and accomplished people with deep roots in Downbeach.

Since the earlier posting it's been discovered that the pier could have been fixed in 2003 for 1.5 million instead of the 4 million it is now approaching. This is according to a study by the City's own consulting engineers.

It's not about preserving icons. It's about doing it wisely with citizen input and forethought instead of the shoot-from-the-hip spendthrift venturing of three amateurs. When it comes to running such a large enterprise as the city with other people's money, wiser heads are needed in City Hall. Just look at the skyrocketing taxes in Ventnor as this trio in office just blunders along and rewards political supporters, the costs be damned.

The present commissioners have built their political careers on an "us vs. them" mentality, fanning that prejudice to a fare-thee-well. It's time to unite the city and bring the people back into working with government.

Elect Kelly, Piatt and Weintrob and clean up City Hall.

The Downashore Team is a group of Philly.com producers. Some of us grew up vacationing at the Jersey Shore, and others came to appreciate it later. Either way, we know our Mack and Manco's from our Prep's Pizza, and we'll do our best to share news, information and musings from up and down the coast. Please do post a comment with your Shore thoughts, or shoot us an e-mail by clicking on the link above. (OK, so we're not really at the beach in this photo, but armed with the power of a good photo editing program, we can dream, right?) We're joined by Inquirer staff writer Amy Rosenberg, who as a year-round Shore resident, knows a thing or two about the scene, and the Shoobies.
