As our best blogger pal Jen reminded us below, there's a very entertaining statewide parlor game being played now in connection with a documentary film, North-South Jersey, being made by three young filmmakers, Jersey guy Steven Chernoski and his Philly pals Alena Kruchkova and Andrei Litvinov. A trailer and more info is available here. It's a great idea for a movie, and an amusing game, but I think most of the confusion is on the part of North Jersey people. For instance, the current question of whether Asbury Park is south Jersey. You can debate all you want, but the answer? No. Not even close. It's LBI and below, though I would concede some overlap in various parts of LBI, which I know because my New York cousins sometimes end up in LBI and feel at home. But the movie guys have come up with some excellent criteria to figure it all out: flip flops or stilettos, bennies or shoobies, shape of soft pretzels and the relative abundance or absense of WaWas. Check it out here. Any suggestions of other criteria to distinguish north or south welcome below.

This was a big topic of discussion at my book launch party last night, especially from a few LBI fans because LBI isn't in my book (but I include LBI in any shore articles I'm doing for the Inquirer). I agree that it's on the cusp, but I'd label it North -- the more I researched the shore, the more I felt it didn't fit with the other towns that are south of the Atlantic City Expressway.
Interestingly enough, I've found the book in a lot of central/North Jersey shore book shops. The reason I'm hearing why? For their visitors who also go to Atlantic City.

I grew up in North Jersy about as far north as you can get. I lived in Oakland, Upper Saddle River and Vernon - all about 2 miles from the NY state line. I moved to the Philadelphia area 20 years ago, but the NJ Shore the people here know is unfamiliar to me. I know Manasquan, Point Pleasant, Spring Lake, etc. Philadelphians know Cape May, Stone Harbor, Avalon, etc. Long Beach Island in neutral but I think was originally discovered by Philadelphians. In the 20 years I have lived here I have never see a World Series Winner, Stanley Cup, NBA First Place, even our famous race horse got lame and couldn't win the triple crown. Did I mention Super Bowl - I have never seen one of those either. Thats why my old loyalties came back during the last Super Bowl (the best one in my lifetime) when the NY (J) Giants beat those smug New Englanders.
