I really think North Carolina's Little Brother has to be my favorite hiphop group right now. It's the fact that their songs aren't the same old bottle popping bling bling rap you hear everywhere these days. Anyone can relate to their music because it talks about everyman issues like paying bills, day jobs, and family life. Their first album "The Listening" was the one that did it for me. Not since I was buying music on cassette tape had there been an album that could be the background music to my everyday life. I swear... that cd would be in rotation every time I took a road trip for about two years straight. Since "The Listening", these guys have toured worldwide, released a second album called "The Minstral Show" on Atlantic Records, put out a bunch of mixtapes, and worked hard to give music lovers an alternative to radio rap.
Little Brother's mc's Phonte and Big Pooh are preparing to release their third album called Getback in September. That gives me a few weeks to start saving up $17.95. Hey, when music is this good, you have to put the laptop down and actually buy a physical copy. If their Illmind produced new single "Good Clothes" is any indication, you can expect lots of comical rhymes and top quality beats. And if you can't wait until September, you are in luck! Little Brother will be in town this Wednesday at Johnny Brenda's in Northern Liberties performing their classics, as well as, new material. Hopefully they will have a few of these Spike Lee EPMD-inspired "Getback" t-shirts on hand.
Little Brother w/ Darrien Brockington, Ethel Cee, & DJ Statik @ Johnny Brenda’s (1201 N. Frankford Ave). Wednesday August 15th. Show starts at 9:30 PM www.johnnybrendas.com
Just to give you an example of them live:

You know what? You're right! I knew it was some sort of early 90's hiphop related reference. Thanks.
