J. Dilla changed my life!

DILLA-delphia

JayDee aka J Dilla was hands down one of the best hiphop producers of the past 15 years. His beatmaking style totally revolutionized the sound of sample-based hiphop music and created the blueprint for the neo-soul sound. In addition to being skilled with an MPC, he was also a talented musician, emcee, and dj. He was the man behind classic tunes from A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, D'Angelo, The Roots, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, Common, and even Janet Jackson. Lots of big name producers like Pharrell Williams and Kanye West list JayDee as one of their top influences. Even if you didn't know who he was, you most likely are familiar with his music. Yet, with as much accomplishment and adoration as he got, he never received the commercial success that he deserved.

Sadly, last February, J Dilla passed away from complications from lupus. The impact of his death can be felt throughout the independent and mainstream music community. He was even included in a tribute to musicians who have we lost in 2006 during the most recent Grammy Awards. Since his passing, there has been a movement in the music community to create awareness of JayDee and all of the music he created in his life. Fans, artists, and associates of Dilla have been keeping his name alive by creating new music out of his unused beats, supporting re-releases of his albums, and throwing benefits events for the J Dilla Foundation (an organization to fight lupus and provide music eduaction).

Tonight, we are lucky enough to have one of these benefit evens happening here in Philadelphia. Simply Dillaful: The Second Annual Tribute to a Musical Genius will be taking place at Fluid Nightclub (613 south 4th st.). DJ Houseshoes, a longtime friend and supporter of JayDee, along with DJ Jayski and DJ Statik, will be playing music from J Dilla's extensive catalog. A portion of the proceeds will go to the J Dilla Foundation

Simply Dillaful @ Fluid (613 south 4th st.). Monday Sept 24th. 10pm-2am. $5 before 11pm, $7 after.
