Tonight is the rebirth of Sylk. Internationally known dj King Britt is bringing back his legendary Back 2 Basics party to it's orginal venue the newly revitalized Silk City(5th & Spring Garden). After taking a bit of a hiatus, Back 2 Basics will return to taking over Monday nights with King Britt and Dozia controlling the sounds.
I felt it was best to get the run down from the man himself about the history of tonight's event. So here is a little Q&A with King Britt:
Can you give us some background on Back 2 Basics?
B2B was thee party in the early 90s. It fused all genres of music into two nights, Mondays (with the live band element and djs) and Saturdays (which was more uptempo dj based). It all started at Silk City in 1990 and went on to change the music scene in philly. Cosmo, ?uestlove, Rich Medina all deejayed with us (King and Doz) over a given period of time. I remember Cosmo being like 17 killin' it on a Saturday. It was like an academy. It shaped us to be able to rock worldwide. Artists and djs from all over the world came too. Charlie Dark, 4Hero, Goldie, Marques Wyatt, Doc Martin, Mark Farina, etc all graced the decks. The other side was the live element. It was quite a scene for musicians. The entire Sylk130 album was sparked from these night of Lady Alma and Tanja singing over our grooves. The band included Dre and Vidal, who now do tracks for everyone from Usher to Michael Jackson, James Poyser, who does music for Erykah (Badu) and single handedly changed the sound of Philly, Tim Motzer, etc... It was the cream of the crop.
What impact did it have on Philly's music scene?
We were playing music from Europe, Brazil, etc.... all over. It was cutting edge and it saved Philly from mediocrety.
What plans do you have for this event in the near future?
Who know what the future holds? Tonights #1 and it will be every monday after....so don't miss one or you may miss a shining star.

The event last night was pretty amazing. I felt like I went back in time to when the club scene here was really active. The venue was packed, the djs and live band rocked it, and the who's who of Philly music and nightlife were in the house.
The fact that this is a weekly event has me pretty exited. As long as people support, this party going to is make some things happen in philly that haven't happened in a while.
