I think it's safe to say that most music lovers who went to college during the 90's know who Portishead is. Your roommate or some guy down the hall was playing it and you had to find out what it was. It was like a right of passage... everyone's first journey into the far left side of the music spectrum. Portishead was one of the leaders in the trip-hop sound that was coming out of the UK during those years. Eerie vocals and film score sampling beats are the elements that made up their unique sound.
Tonight we are lucky enough to have DJ Andy Smith, who mined samples and provided dj support for Portishead, in town at Fluid Nightclub(613 S. 4th Street). I know you may be thinking that he is just going to be playing a bunch of down tempo tracks in the vein of Portishead's signature sound, but Andy Smith's own sound extends far beyond that of the group that made him world renown. He's a big name in the UK's hiphop and funk scenes. His dj mix series, The Document, has garnered lots of fans worldwide with its mixture of true school hiphop, northern soul, rare grooves, boogaloo tracks, and grimy dub. His live sets are even more diverse. Expect him to go from Dusty Springfield to Muddy Waters to Jeru the Damaja without skipping a beat.
Smith has played at a bunch of parties in Philly over the last few years, and I have managed to miss every single one. After checking out some of the live mixes he has for download on his website, www.djandysmith.com, I'm totally convinced I have to be there this time. And, just so you know tonight's event is guestlist only, but you can sign up at http://www.simplefly.net/andysmith. Hurry before the list closes! See you there.
