"If you are running for President...HEAR This."

July 14, 2007 camp Fallujah, Iraq

It's come to a point in this jouney that I've felt compelled to go out on a limb. Thinking about that phrase I often wonder who exactly it was that coined it and how did he/she actually end up after the excursion to the far reaching ends of what must have been a very big tree. Oh well, going out there anyway is half the fun.

Being in this place called Iraq during war, and quite aware that stateside all kinds of discussions are going on daily regarding how, what, when and where to do this or that, and why, I felt it time to speak up. It's pointless for me to attempt to answer any or all of those questions, however, I will address the "who" in such a way that will surely gain the attention of all the readers of this blog, and hopefully even some of the "whos" that might stumble upon it. Here goes.

I

've asked the question to many, many of the ones here in Iraq that we, the American public sent over here to do a job, "who can fix this place/war in Iraq?" On every occassion that I've ventured into that area of thought, the answer is nearly always the same.
Paraphrased, the answer comes back something like this..."Whomever gets elected, they must see what it is we are doing over here."

Pondering that answer, over and over in my mind I came to realize that the boots on the ground got it exactly right. So, the deeper I thought about it, the more I became burdened to convey my experience to those who are not just listening or viewing or reading what I'm putting out there, but now, to those who are about to hear. Come and see for yourself.

Over the years I've seen them all come and go at various times. You know, those ones that get elected every two, four or six years. They fly in, they do the photo-op thing, they shake lots of hands, they find just the right person that will make them look good on some cover of a magazine, paper, or whatever, and then they do the same thing....leave in a hurry.
I've been there when they step off the planes. I've hurried them onto awaiting vehicles that take them to their particular bubble world of big media lights, cameras and no action. And I've been there too, assisting them back onto their planes for the quick getaway back to the comforts of their plush offices, that we all pay for. And I shook their hands and said "thanks for coming" and then said, "good bye."

It was always around October, when the pollsters were saying a "quickie trip to Iraq will move you up in the polls". For years I've been a witness to this on many occassions. But now, I've got an idea. Let's just see if anyone who is running for President in '08, and by golly, there appears to be quite a few of them, has the integrity to really come and feel the heartbeat of what "the mission" actually is.

If someone is running for President of the USA, and has lots and lots to say about Iraq at the moment, then I say to any and all of those potential contendors, come and walk just one mile in the shoes of those I've walked among. Come and stay on the racks I've slept on among those that have to sleep in much worse than I. Come and eat the food I've eaten among those that don't eat in a fancy, brand new, KBR built chow hall with all the fine amenities of any good resturant stateside. Come and use the hygine facilities that may or may not have toilet paper available, or water for that matter. Bring your own baby wipes, you'll need them. Come and go for a walk in 120-degree heat with 75-lbs of government issued equiptment on your back that the salesmen insist will save lives. And then listen, at the end of the day, to those who are fighting the fight, walking the walk, and not just talking the talk.

Who are you Mr. or Ms. Presidential contender? Where are you? Why have you not come to see those you've sent here to be in harms way? I'm not talking about going to camp Anaconda, the 16-square mile club med garrison. I'm not talking about the "green zone".
I'm talking about where 1/3 of the American casualties were taken up through 2006. I talking about Anbar province. One cannot see this place in a two-hour photo op. Whom among all the contenders currently vying for President of the USA could or would venture out to the streets of Fallujah, where something has been happening for long time now.

Without naming names, I know of some who could handle the challenge. One of them was a POW during the Viet Nam War. Another stood on the rubble where the twin towers fell. Another whose family has hundreds of millions of dollars might capture a view of where some of his tax sheltered investments, could have been utilized. Still another, might not fit it, for in certain zones, very, very few females have ever been seen. And there are others, who are "potential candidates" who as of late have been extremely vocal on Iraq, yet to my knowledge have not seen or experienced what I have been graced with on my journey.

All of them who are contending for the coveted office of President of the USA, have so much "opinion" about Iraq, whether it be from the left or from the right.
But I remember my current commander in chief stating on more than one occassion, "it depends on what the commanders on the ground are saying". So, there it is. I am now personally inviting anyone who is running for or considering running for President of the USA to come to where I've been the past two months. On the ground and in the air with those you've tasked to do a job.

The angle of view from this vantage point will surely be enlightening. Come to where I am before you speak one more word concerning Iraq. Sit and listen to those who have battled for the priveledge to speak, yet have not spoken up, yet. The country needs this.
The voters are screaming for this. And I am now announcing it to all those running for President. We will see who heeds the call. There are a lot of "boots" on the ground that are waiting to see who has the integrity to step up to such a call. My suggestion is make the first stop, Jubail precinct, in Fallujah, Iraq.

Then, and probably only then, will the "voters" really listen to what any potential candidate for President of the USA may have to offer.

Maybe this should be dropped on the desk of EVERY Presidential wannabe. And maybe take Nancy and Harry for vehicle patrol?
Just a thought.

Jim-

WOW is all I have to say. And that goes for all of you brave and honest folks over there embedded with the troops. My cousin has served 2 terms, and my wife has a best friend who's husband will be going back on a second tour. I just wish you would please give all the brave men and women who you are proudly embedded with our endless thanks. If it were not for them we wouldn't be as safe as we are today, and you wouldn't be able to get the truth out about what is really going on over in that region. Now I stumbled across your article and I am not sure if you have a whole website dedicated to your writing and your time over in the battlefield?

I will now go into letting you know that I only wish I could have the money to fly my father over to meet you and these brave men and women, with open arms at that. John Bootie would be who my father is. You are probably scratching your head and saying who is that. Well you are NOT alone, because we have yet to find the right source to get him noticed. See my father is running as an Independent candidate for 08'. We are a small grass roots campaign with our own money as funding. Now saying that this may be making you laugh and that is okay, because I am sure you can use a few good laughs every now and then. Yes we know how much of an uphill battle this will be, and to most it may look like a pointless effort. But my father is dedicated to sticking this out till the end. He says this is God's campaign, and whatever happens for us, it comes from God desires for our future. He said he is so sick and tired of folks complaining but not standing up to do anything. Well he has decided to stand up and attempt them impossible. He wants to "SERVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE", he feels that is what the president should do while they are fulfilling the "TEMPORARY JOB", they get voted in for.

Okay well I have rambled on enough so if you have gotten this far in my email thank you. If you know of anyway (organizations, grants, funding) we could get the money to come over I know I could get him to go. But I am sure it costs so much to have someone fly you over to Iraq that it is just about impossible for us to come up with such funds. Well have a great day. Please you and all our brave service men and women, be safe and may god be with you during this great task you are doing for our country.

God Bless,

Excellent suggestion, Jim. And Falluja would be the perfect place for them to go since there would be not news media there to make a circus of the event (unless they tow them in along with them... which they probably would).

Jeff Hickey:

Bingo Jimmy! The one message I hope you guys get is WE know that the SURGE is working and that it's a hell of a tough job and these troops perform and they need a huge raise!!

SGT Thomas A. De Carlo:

Jim,

I like what you wrote here. From an infantryman's standpoint, I'd say its, "dead on balls" accurate. To be honest, I want to be here. Almost all of us want to be here. In fact I wish anyone who lost a loved one over here and decided that it would be a good idea to protest would realize one thing.

IT'S NOT THE SIXTIES! WE HAVE AN ALL-VOLUNTEER MILITARY!

I personally have a lot of time in this country. I currently have been in the U.S. Army for 5 years as infantryman, and would also like to personally invite any political candidate for any office on a patrol, ambush, raid, etc.

Maybe I should run for a seat in any office. That way I could tell the whole world my tactics and plans, and on top of that, make more rules for my military forces to abide by. The "negative" media would be permitted to kill more soldiers. While we're at it, a date will be set for the war to be over, that way we can say, "game over." Because as you may already know, with any great battle or war, the leaders always set a time and date as to when it would be complete, and then told the enemy our next move. Yeah, that's how its always been done, right?

In fact, I believe what we need for our country is a good ol' fashioned weak leader. One that will succumb to every lazy, television watching, non-active, spoiled, uneducated, American. My father raised me to be proud of the flag, follow my leaders, and to protect my country and our beliefs, no matter what the cost. Not to complain because life got a little hard, and I was forced to do some real work.

As an infantry fire team leader, I will never tell my boys to do anything I can not, have not, or will not do myself. One would think the leader of an entire country would feel the same way.
